M Graff
Hello fellow forumites! I'm starting a new project; the brass kit mfg HNJ's steam locomotive class N3! This is the contents of the kit: Seems to me to be a good kit! :-)
M Graff
This is the progress so far. The gearbox was a bit fiddly to get smooth, but after some fine adjusting, it is super nice! :-) The boiler is made from thick brass tubes and cast brass pieces. It was a job for the propane torch! Just going to add the smoke box overlay and the boiler bands before detailing it. The tender chassis is very nicely designed and went together true and square without any trouble. The goal is to complete this loco in 50 hours. :-) I'm only 3.5 hours in the project so far....;-)
relaxinghobby
What gear ratio and motor is that and is it supplied with the kit?
brossard
Impressive looking kit. I will watch with interest. John
M Graff
What gear ratio and motor is that and is it supplied with the kit? The motor is a Mashima 12v, but I don't know which size..... (125?). The gearbox is a Load hauler (I guess), from High Level: http://www.highlevelkits.co.uk/ They are delivered with the kit. The gear ratio seem to be 60:1. Allegheny1600
Great start on a lovely looking kit. I would have spent that 3.5 hours looking at all the parts! Cheers, John E.
M Graff
I've made some progress.... The tender is almost finished. Only the buffers and lights to do..... Here's a rather poor pic of the tender: Better pics will come.
M Graff
Some news. To clarify, it is HO scale, but the loco class is named N3. The fasteners for the walkway: A bit tricky design as it's so tight between the parts. It would have been disappointing if the moving parts became solid...... I used some wet tissue paper to keep the parts separated. The instructions (in English non the less), says to use alu foil. But I have experienced that the solder can creep along it by capillary action when using it..... The other side..... The inner core for the cab soldered in place along with the floor. The roof beams in place. The cabs outer skin in place, I used tooth picks in the hand rail holes to fixate it while soldering it! A pic of the "completed" tender. I built the water fill hatch and attached two tool boxes on the deck. There is a "small" alteration here.... The front wall of the tender is sawn off!!! I got a message from a owner of a N3 loco, and he mentioned that the gable is too low! I checked some photos of the original, and it was the truth! It differed a lot, 3/16"! I then sawed off the gable and will now try to make a nice and strong fill piece. The original had some L-beams on the front, so I will utilise the same on the model. This is how it looks right now. The boiler have had all the various holes marked out. []
M Graff
This how the extended tender front wall looks. Much better! :-)
M Graff
Hi all, I have not been able to post any pics of the build thanks to a faulty camera.... This is how far I've come though: A bit more to do. I've managed to get the fully compensated chassis to work very good. I made the power pick ups from bronze strips soldered to vero-board that I attached to the underside of the chassis. I'm waiting for some parts to arrive before finishing it. I'll start the second build in the mean time... :-)
M Graff
I've started on my other loco, the Swedish 0-8-2 tank engine "Åt". Will be fun!
