This year's Cardiff show is in a new location - Glantaf High School (in Welsh Ysgol Gyfun Gwmraeg Glantaf). Details are given on ;-

http://www.cardiffmodelrail.org.uk/

This includes postcode, how to get there and public transport information.

The new venue has free parking - unlike the previous years where punters were ripped off by Vinci - and is much more suitable for staging an exhibition.

As usual a good range of high quality layouts plus Geoff Kent and Geoff Taylor as demonstrators.

I took Castle works to the waterfront museum show last weekend in Swansea, Organised by the Swansea and Neath clubs, Plenty of interest shown from the fellows there into visiting the Cardiff show, and plenty of flyers were handed out...........

on a more personal note Sanatorium road will break cover over the next weekend with some photos appearing here, as long as the photographer (BR2975)s' son pitches up camera in hand.

shortly the Arriva TW bubble will be running with its new Auistralian replacement motor.

considerable work on the weathering of all the locos has been undertaken by Mr Brian Tucker, some of the weathered Hornby 08s ran at swansea last week as a running in, numerous positive remarks were made to the realistic finish acheived, so hats off to Brian Tucker there.

Rolz minor. (by a long way)

Sorry for the typo in the above it should be Cymraeg - my excuse is that I was just about to go under the knife so my mind was elsewhere.

Another feature of this year's show is that Sandy Croall of Penlan fame will be there on Dunvant. The layout will for the first time be operated as pre-grouping LNWR using all of Sandy's stock. This is the first time that much of it has been seen in public.

Hi again

I've just returned from a really good outing to the Cardiff exhibition.

I was very impressed by Naturol's Sanatorium Road. He was running around very stressed when the show opened because his DCC Controller failed to work.

I'll let him fill in the details, suffice to say that Paul and his mate Steve had to operate with the controller virutally hidden away underneath one end of the layout.

I'd also wager that Paul will need a pint or three tonight...He was giving Steve detailed operating instructions in step-by-step-by-step, button-by-button-by-button broadcast proclamations.

You could sense the anxiety of a first outing. If he still has a voice after today....

To say that I am impressed with Paul's new layout is a massive understatement - I spent an age watching the movements.

I don't think he'd mind me saying that the layout hasn't got detail at the microscopic level, but what it has got is atmospheric detail in abundance.

Of special note are the many excellent (hand-built) Infrastructure vehicles - they looked superb under close scrutiny through the lenses of my Papillio binoculars.

Another layout I was very impressed with was the Scalefour Allt y Graban Road by Bernie Baker.

It is a simple layout in concept, having a slightly inclined double track mainline along the front, with a couple of sidings to the rear, but it captured the mood of a small yard to perfection.

Watching the trains go by through the binoculars was amazing... I went back time and time again to drink it all in.

The highest compliment I could pay would be to say that this is a layout I’d love to own.

I began by feeling slightly self conscious using the Papillio binoculars at such a large exhibition,

However, I handed them over to many operators and spectators for a trial, and everyone who tried them was very surprised and highly impressed by the realism.

The esteemed Geoff Kent was also expressed astonishment when he viewed some of his own superb buildings through the binoculars.

The only downside of the day...

The dick-h3ad representing the O-Gauge Guild was obnoxiously rude to me calling me a sad individual when I tried to help an elderly gentleman with poor vision who was struggling to examine the motion on a static ‘’O-Gauge” steam locomotive on a rolling road. He was using a hand-held magnifying glass. I got him to try using the binoculars, but as his wife explained, he had very limited vision. He appreciated me trying to help, but it was to no avail.

If anyone is in the Cardiff area tomorrow, this show is definitely worth a visit. I wasn't going as, essentially, I only remembered about it at 2pm today and we're busy tomorrow, but Mrs Clarke insisted that we go for a couple of hours - I've always gone to shows on my own in the past so was a bit worried she wouldn't enjoy it.

However, I think we were both impressed with the standard of the majority of the layouts - particularly Allt-y-Graban Road.(P4) and Dunvant (EM). The conversation trying to explain to my wife why us 4mm modellers have three gauges to choose from was interesting! Our 11 month old son seemed to enjoy it too, getting very excited watching the layouts.- particularly at the sight of all the buttons and switches on the Dunvant control panel....... got to start them young, although he can keep his hands of Daddy's EM stock for a while yet please!

All in all, Cardiff is a great show - I've been attending on and off for the past 15 years and the days of the Star Centre. The new venue this year is good - it's in a school and I commend the organisers in fitting a lot into a reasonably small area without it feeling crowded.

Well worth a few hours tomorrow if you're free.

Cheers

Alastair

Maybe you should try a better story or one closer to the event than the one you portay of yourself being a samaritan to the elderley gentleman who had been there a while before you turned up and was quite taken back with your pushy attitude to his conversastion with me, and added why you found it nessasery to come round to mide side of the table leaning over the people who were there and within a few inches of the loco in question, with no invite to do so, signed Dick Head who does'nt need to use binoculars to see something from a few inches away !!!.

Putting the blame on me for criticising your attitude on the forum is the way you work, eh?

I did not push them at the gentleman - I offered them to him, and he took up my offer.

I seem to remember you trying them as well. Or is that also a product of my imagination?

Popped along today and found it quite enjoyable for what I was led to think was going to be quite a downsized show compared to the previous years. Perhaps there were more local layouts but the mix and stardard were uniformly good. I won't name names but among lots of enjoyable stuff, I was particularly pleased to see Cornwallis Yard, which seemed to operate as well as it looked. Having seen it in many mags over the years it looked smaller in the flesh, but in a good way - pleasantly compact, a testament to clever design, I think, cramming a lot of railway into a relatively small area.

I was feeling a bit stressed out with work this week and debating with myself whether it was worth the 30 mins drive to get down there for a couple of hours, but on balance I was glad to have gone.

I liked the new venue, there seemed to be plenty of Free parking - a problem I understand in the previous venue.

The new venue also seemed less cluttered with the College's belongings, and once the catering staff got organised on Saturday,

that side seemed to get along OK, especially Sunday morning when they wisely saw the selling point of Bacon Butties, lots of them........

Still on catering, I think 80 chairs in the cafe area may have been too many, it was like an obstacle course, however this was the first year at the new venue, there will always be a few teething problems, I'm sure the management will be discussing them sometime.

I was pleased to see Bernie Baker's layout, we have met on and off for many long years up at the Severn Valley Rly,

so at last something worthwhile to show for all that S&T time.

Someone mentions the Star Centre, I go back to Sophia Gardens, 10,000+ people through the doors.... Agh, long ago though.

I enjoyed just/only being responsible for my stock on Dunvant over the weekend, and in spite of what John Miles said, it wasn't ALL there, some boxes were left at home!!! Penlan (the layout) is hopefully going to be there in 2014, it will be the last outing for the layout as it celebrates it's 25th Birthday, plus I'm getting to old to cart it up and down from/to the attic area of our house by myself - the operating team are based in Malvern and Cardiff.

Fact finding mission - a lad in our village who visits family every other week in Brynmawr stated 'Brain's Dark is no longer available'... well I heard it was, though I didn't see any, there was Brain's Black in the pub I visited - plus we had an excellent Indian meal at the Mughal Emperor (Near Cowbridge) on Saturday night.

A good show, there's not many shows anyway in South Wales,

so hopefully modellers did make the effort to go and support the Club's and Traders, including Squires.

And thanks to John Miles for starting this Topic, and keeping it going.

BTW Mickey - Location - Escafield = 'Sheffield', and you have a Cornish flag flying too..

As one of the show organisers I would like to say how pleased (and relieved) we all are that the show was a success this year and at the comments received from visitors and traders about the quality of the show and the new venue. This was the 3rd venue in 4 years and we don’t want to move again in a hurry and we thank you all for sticking with us.

In recent years we have tried to raise the standard of the show and judging by comments received and word on the grapevine, we seem to be succeeding. More high quality demonstrators such as Geoffs Kent and Taylor have raised the profile and more of the gauge societies have asked for a presence, we hope to keep it up for future years.

Squires made their first appearance this year and although they would like to come back they would hope to raise their sales to make it worthwhile in the future. It is difficult to attract the more specialist trader to shows of our size for that reason so I hope you will all save your shopping until next years show.

We would also like to thank the exhibitors and demonstrators for being very understanding about their expenses this year and trying their best to keep these to a minimum. This was a great help to us in trying to maintain the viability of the show.

Regarding Mr Lewis, the elderly gentleman and the binoculars (where’s Miss Marple when you need her?) it is unfortunate that there seems to have been some upset caused and that things are being posted that don’t reflect well on the exhibition. We are all aware that exhibitors are very protective of their models, for good reason and that sometimes the inquisitive may get closer than some would like. I trust that this was no more than an over-reaction and that no more will be said about it.

Look out for next years show.

Due to a long standing family commitment in the East Midlands (which I confess, I forgot about) I was unable to attend this year, leaving others to fetch, carry and operate - for which I apologise.

Everyone I have been in contact with spoke positively about the new venue, and helping set up on Friday evening, I concur.

I now know what 'plywood wonder' is in Welsh after seeing Mr Baker's layour - albeit sans stock on Friday.

I too recall Sophia Gardens, it was where I first saw HO US brass with sound, by a firm from Consett ?

I was also there the night the roof fell in, chasing kids nicking the skates !

Next time try the 'Reverend James' by BrAIns - recommended.

My colleagues tell me next years event is already being planned.

And next year I will be there.

br2975, Next time try the 'Reverend James' by BrAIns - recommended.

That did pass beyond my lips this weekend and previously too, quality.

BTW - OT - I noticed a 6" dia. pipe from the Schools foundations for 'breathing' Radon gas out of the ground.

We have Radon in west Cornwall too, but I don't recall seeing any attempt to allow the ground to 'breath' via pipework up into the atmosphere before.
