Antics of Cardiff

Antics have relocated - after years of being at the top of St Mary's Street, usefully near Crane's music for those of us with a liking for other, shinier toys - they are now opposite Cardiff Central railway station. I popped in just before the old place closed, while they were packing stock, and visited the new place on saturday - this time as they were unpacking. Looks as if they still have to sort out the railway section properly as the display was a bit haphazard, but I'm sure they'll get there. The new shop is larger than either floor of the old, but now all on one level rather than an upstairs and a downstairs. Be interesting to see whether they still retain any connection to Bud Morgan, as there was still that lineage in the old place in St Mary's Street.

Aside from Lord and Butler and Lendons of Llanishen, both a bit out from the center, there are three fairly well equipped shops with decent model train sections in the center of Cardiff - Antics, Ian Allan and ModelZone - all within 5 minutes walk of each other. Hopefully they can all continue to do business as I have found them all to be friendly and worth supporting.

'Barry Ten' appears to have changed his writing genre, and gone in for guide books !

.

I fully concur with the content of your post - especially as IA, Modelzone and Antics form part or all of my lunchtime exercise route around the city centre, during which it is not uncommon to collide with other RMwebbers !.

.

The displays in all three are worthy of passing attention, and occasionally show bargains that match certain box-shifters even taking p+p into account.

PS

'Bud Morgan' ?

I didn't think you were 'that old' ....... did you ever frequent the original shop in the Castle Arcade ? or even 'The Model Shop' formerly in Mill Lane (but now a 'sex shop' !!).

PPS

What about the shop that 'survived' in Broadway, Roath for a few years - most of the punters having been frightened off by the attitude of the proprietor !

I did visit the old shop in the arcade, even remember old one-armed Bud himself. I remember buying a Graham Farish 00 private owner wagon which I still have, an early Christmas present one year - 74 or 75 ish, I'd imagine. Later I went there with my grandmother from Barry a few times.

Don't remember that one... but visits to Cardiff were not all that frequent when I was small, not when we had the emporium of delights that was Dan Evans

department store in Barry on our doorsteps.

Time to relocate methinks as we dont have a decent shop now in Plymouth! :(

Bri, what was the one on the Hayes, used to have a Napoleonic /Waterloo diorama in the window?????

Was it 'Mr Williams' who also worked in Bud's? Can remember Bud very well indeed!

Plus the other outlet 'upstairs'! All model trains!

I think there were a few others now that have gone by the by, one just of Queen St, by Bales (I think) fishing tackle and another in Morgans Arcade?

What a treasury of shops!!!!!!

Yes, I remember Bud Morgan in the Castle Arcade, I also remember the Model Shop in Mill Lane (premises became Cardiff's first sex shop) and the basement of John Hall Tools in the Morgan Arcade.

sorry, but Upstairs in John Hall Tools in the arcade was my haunt for models and trains......

after being taken by my Dad to the both buds and the one behind the now st davids centre... specialised in lots of airfix slot cars and scalextric

but im younger than you lot...... only 36 last year.....

i used to have a grated cheese crusty cob and a sasparella in the arcade cafe where it splits by john hall tools....

now to remember all that.... i have just forgotten something important......, oh yeah , I was 35 last birthday...

whoop whoop.

Rol minor ( by a long way)

Sanatroium road is looking better now, more scenery added and all running, unsure how my home made stock using card and wood will go down mind at the show very apprehensive. i hope no one turns up with binoculars to inspect the infrastructure work, they might get a splinter at that close range..

I used to work in FC Parker, on the corner of Royal Arcade, and next to the old Spiller's records. Roger Harris owned and ran this shop together with Toytown (R + L Models in Albany Doad0. When I worked in Parker's we were essentially a toy and games shop, focussing on role playing and wargaming stock. This included Avalon Hill, Games Workshop, SPI and TSR games as well as citadel, Ral Partha, and Essex miniatures. The napoleonic display was to promote the Prince August range of moulds for casting your own miniatures.

Halcyon days, as you say John Hall tools had a modelling section upstairs, and they were in the adjacent arcade. Hywel williams had a toy shop stocking Hornby and Scalex, halfway down the Royal Arcade at the junction to Morgan Arcade. Beatties of London opened at kingsway, canton models was a short walk down Cowbridge road and Garth Models was not far from the flyover interchange at Western/Eastern Avenue, as well as the ones that have already been mentioned.

Cardiff was rich in Model shops and a real delight to make your way around. I also agree with all the coments about Terry's Trainshop in broadway.

Happy memories.

Sorry Rat,

I can't place you, although I was friendly with two of the (later) Beattie's lads (Alan and Steve - big aircraft fans, we went to a couple of the International Air Tatoo's together and the very last RAF Mildenhall show as well). My mate got a Christmas job there in 1996 or 1997, I can't remember when exactly, but it had already begun it's transition to a toy store by then. He talks of Brett and Tracey, the management team, whom he got on well with.

Went into the new Antics shop today; suspended ceiling is still down with no lighting at the rear of the shop. Guess where the railway stuff is - so I saw nothing.

Most firms do the refit before they move in!

In my first week 'on the beat' in August, 1979 my tutor took me to Burrell's - a shop in Wilson Road, Ely where the owner had unearthed several boxes of circa 1960 Hornby Dublo (2 and 3-rail) and Tri-Ang stock, all boxed (mint) with their pre-decimal prices affixed.

.

They were offered to me, at the 'face value' ..........................

.

If only I hadn't declined, and salted them away.

PS

I think the shop behind the now St Davids centre may have been 'Wiesbards' - the old man used to take me there (long before 'naturol' was born ..... 35 my buttocks) to buy parts for dolls houses and forts he used to make as a 'sideline'.

Yep, always worth a nose in the window or popping upstairs.

I was in Antics Cardiff on the weekend and they had lights in the railway section. Was chatting with the boys in there and they have had to do the refit on the fly as they have been doing 2 shop refits at once and couldnt afford a months down time in either. Yes unfortunatly they have no suspended ceiling over the rail section yet but thats due to supply problems with the people who are refitting the ceiling.

Antics Plymouth............ hardly any model railway stock at all apart from a few odds and ends! It used to be pretty well stocked out and you could always get something or other.

Seems to be more air rifles etc now than railways!

Went in the other week Black Rat and vowed not to go back ever.Asked the fella behind the counter what was going on regarding the model railway stuff and got some mumbled rude reply.I just use Chris' Crafts and Models now.

For this years Christmas shopping trip we have decided to visit Cardiff, so all being well we should be able too have a good look around the model shops in the city center.

Normally we go to Cheltenham or Bath by car but for Cardiff we shall travel by train, should be fun.

It's a bit of a trek to Lord & Butlers, but I found it worth it.
