Hi guys i have a question again ,I had a DCC sound install done here in the US and the job was botched up big time .The decoder and sound are still ok but the install is rotten .Is there anyone out there i can turn to to get it fixed properly and running as it should , the lights on the DMU do not work properly and only one coach illuminates . I am quite willing to ship it to the UK if that is what it takes to get it fixed right , it is an expensive lesson for me but i only make that kind of mistake once !!

If you outlined with loco (DMU?) and which decoder, then someone might be able to guide you on how to sort it out.

Alternatively, there are any number of DCC specialist installers in the UK who might take it on. Problem may be how much botching they might have to undo - depends if it is "really hardware broken" botched, not properly connected, or just CV software settings.

The model is a class 108 DMU with a Howes ESU Loksound v.4 decoder , the decoder is fine as far as i can tell but the installation is done poorly , hardwired rather than plug in ????? As i said in my original post the lights do not work correctly they flash on and off , do not change with a direction change , the second coach does not illuminate at all !!! i would prefer to use someone local to me here in the US but i cannot find anyone that will do it unless i want to wait several months , that is why i am looking to the good ole Uk for help once again .i tried to contact Howes but so far no reply ??

Flashing lights can be two issues according to the ESU manual for the V4.

a) Overload on outputs, indicates a fault.

b ) Incorrect speed step, or failure of automatic speed step detection method.

For (a) installer has really messed up, and it needs someone who understands the loco internal wiring to sort it out.

For ( b ) for many decoders this can be caused by CV29 and the speed steps from command station not matching decoder.

But, to begin with as the LokSound is rather smart here, read CV49. A value of 19 indicates that the LokSound is trying to automatically read the speed steps and this is failing. If that is the case, try CV49=3 (turning off the auto-detection of speed steps), and then check the value of CV29.

For CV29, read back and see what value you have. See http://www.2mm.org.u... calculator.htm for tool to interpret CV29, and explanation.

Assuming your command station is set to 28 or 128 steps, then with decoder address 3, I'd suggest a value of 6 for CV29, and then work from there.

2nd Coach lights; depends how they were wired in the original before your installer started on things. Is this one of the models with an electrical connector plug across the coupling between coaches, or is it a model which expects a second decoder in the trailer car ? If the latter, then has a decoder been installed, and have you set the address of the trailer car to match the power car ?

I'm currently fitting a ESU sound decoder to my 108, if it's a Bachman model it requires a second decoder (function only) in the dummy car for the lights. There's no wire connections between the coaches.

Dont know why your installer removed the 8 pin socket, the ESU chip plugs straight into it and controls the directional lighting in the driving car. I'm modifying the coach lighting in my two cars as bachman only provided lighting at the ends of the cars, putting some additional SMT LEDs in the middle section.

The biggest problem is finding somewhere to put the speaker. Still exploring this, options include removing some of the seating or cutting a hole through the floor pan. I'm trying to get hold of a sugar cube speaker to try out but everywhere seems to be 'out of stock' at present.

If it's any help I'll post some pictures.

Ray, might be worth trying with Charlie at DC kits as he had good stocks of the sugarcube speaker. I have used one in a 150 and it works well down in the fuel tank under the floor.

Thanks for that Mark, will be seeing Charlie at the weekend.

Hi Charlie, I'm after a sugar cube speaker for my installation (don't have any problems myself). I'll be delivering you some books on Saturday (Manchester mre) from Peter M, so will see what speakers you have.

Ray.
