CE trains, 1982

Apart from the obvious bogie ballast hoppers, what else would have been likely to have been seen in departmental use in the southern region in 1982, and in what liveries?

 

At the moment I'm open to any thoughts - fresh ballast, spoil, track panels, sleepers, rail, etc.

 

Bonus points for anything that's available as a kit or rtr repaint/simple conversion in O gauge.

 

Extra points if there's anything I can use a Lima mk1 for - I have memories of an engineering train in the 90's with a carriage at the front (it was nighttime and seen from a distance) which I assume may well have been for the workmen, but not sure if it was a conversion of something specifically for the job or just a spare one lying around that was 'borrowed' from somewhere for the weekend.

I have a few photos from the early 1980s including shots of Salisbury - Meldon workings

empty wagons going down to load stone (as the Southern seemed to call ballast).

33021 seen at St Davids with a variety of empties on a Salisbury - Meldon working, the 3rd and 4th might be grampus, 5/11/81

33019 has an assortment of empty wagons as it passes Exeter Central, the 2nd to 7th are possibly dace, 11/3/83

 

Also possibly of interest is a page from the 'C.C.E WAGON GUIDE' dated October 1983.

Page 25 lists all the CCE wagon pools allocated to the Southern Region, and their home assigned base (if any)

this will give a good idea of how the fleet was made up.

From observations in Kent, 1981-6 ish:

Grampus (lots of) - ballast, spoil, bits and bobs

Those Dace conversions came in, mixed with the Grampus, around that period

Salmon for track panels (not many Sturgeon on the SR),

Bogie ballast hoppers as you said (don't recall many 4w hoppers around 1981-4).

And various oddments, pretty much as the doc in post 2.

 

Should I look out some photos?

(can't do today, but I think there's some of mine on the Tonbridge footbridge thread)

Sharks might have been less used on the SR because of the Con. rail.

The SR had their own version of the Shark, based on the SECR brake van, IIRC:-

'Whales' were originally built for the SR; the extra 10t capacity would have been pretty useful when you have to haul stone from Devon to Kent. All the Clam/Rudd/Tope wagons had yet to be converted in 1982- I remember seeing rakes of donor HTVs stabled all over the NE. Likewise Limpets; the initial conversion to POA opens was just starting, I believe, so the conversion of POAs to Limpets was a long way off.

'Lamphrey', as shown as the 1st and 4th wagons in the photo of the 33 at Exeter were still common- some would later be rebuilt with fixed sides (Crab?). There would probably still be ex-traffic 5 plank opens around, along with ex-LNER steel Hi-fits.
