Poor old Comet

I saw the future twenty years ago while driving across the American midwest. All those small town centres which had been full of apparently healthy locally owned retailers and businesses during my first trip in 1970 were boarded up and semi derelict. While just outside the town line, so presumably free of city taxes, would be a Walmart or equivalent mall where everyone now had no choice but to shop. The only exceptions seemed to be a few towns that were able to sell themselves as "such and such historic downtown". There was nothing special about the run of these towns- they were generally about five blocks long by three wide and seemed to come in two designs depending on whether the RR ran parallel to the main street or crossed it- but with their bars, mom and pop restaurants, drugstores and of course shops they did provide a local centre.where people got to meet

My local Comet has started an everything must go clearance, generally 10% off but some items were upto 30%. Thought of a replacement for my 7 year old desktop pc box but think I will wait to see if the discount goes up as I doubt they will go quickly and the existing is still adequate for my use of it.

Probably still cheaper from a computer specialist.

Talking of stores disappearing from the High St BHS have announced they are closing their store in the centre of Cardiff (Queen St) in January.

p.s. when I bough a £40 kettle in Comet a few months ago they tried to sell me an extended warranty!
