Using Gun Black to blacken check rails

Recommended Posts

Just completed some pointwork and until now I have always painted check rails and areas of pointwork where the wheels wouldn't touch. Painting is not 100% successful as it does chip or wear when track cleaning, even with a primer beforehand.

Has anyone tried using Gun Black to blacken the non running rails? Seems a logical answer, but don't have any to hand to try...

Yes, I do it all the time and not just check rails. The finish provides a very good basis for any further painting and can be polished off the surface of running rails leaving a shine in the right place. However, 'blackening' agents don't necessarily make the rails black. Most selenium based compounds (e.g. the Carrs and Birchwood Casey products) turn nickel silver a dark brown colour. Some examples of steel rail here and here (using Birchwood Casey Gun Blue) as yet unpainted, and you may be able to see the brown colouring on nickel silver here.
