RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted November 13, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2012 Hi all There was a brief discussion in the Dapol loco thread on this one - see http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/1150-Dapol-class-22/page__hl__6331__st__950 Arose because D6331 is recorded in Adrian Curtis's D63xx mag as in store from 69 to 71 if I remember correctly - perpetuated in already well thumbed MLI on same topic. Knew she was working off Gloucester in 1970 which made her an active 82A loco, listed as withdrawn from 82A in March 71 - and then the photo on page 73 of this latest rag caused further questions as there she is at Exeter on 3/5/71 with the only other GFYE loco of this class - D6312. So why transfer a withdrawn loco down to Exeter? Talking to Mr TV of this parish last night he had the answer gleaned from meticulous garnering of information over the years. His records suggest that D6331 - along with other 82A locos D6336/56 was transferred to Laira when the class finished in the Bristol area. D6331 was leading the convoy on 2/5/71 and caught fire at Sampford Peverell, requiring attention from the local fire brigade and resulting in it being dumped at Exeter. Here it languished until collected and taken - in a freight hauled by 827 - back up to Swindon. Thanks Steve! So based on that the recorded withdrawal date of March 71 may also be stretching matters - or is this another example of a withdrawn loco being used in traffic? Kind regards Phil
waggy
It would seem it only travelled as far as Bristol rather than Swindon, as i saw it along with 6310/15/27/29/40/54 and 846/50/65 all withdrawn at St Phillips Marsh on 13/08/1971, also seen that day was 6356 at Newton Abbott. All my sightings from a weeks Western Region Rover can be seen in On This Day In History - page

I wanted to edit that post afterwards to make it less specific - went back north - as I suspected that she ended up at SPM - but the system wouldnt let me! Cheers anyway Phil

Project22
a number of the class 22s were moved dead from site to site prior to scrapping. 6319 was a good one it was condemned at st Phillips marsh, and then set to Swindon for cutting. of course then to be saved and sadly still cut.
