Rear axle has excessive movement you can see the rear wheels whobbling from side to side, taken chassis keeper plate off, looks like wear in the outer chassis block recesses, the brass axle bearings look ok, also stalling on

pointwork, back to back gauge ok, its a 2008 model. not seen any wheel sets for sale and would be hard to find a new chassis block.

Operating normally, whatever wear occurs should be minimal provided there has been some lubricant present, and inside the two brass bearing collars on the axle. If the bearing collars are badly worn through lack of lubrication then they will be slack on the axles, if they have have seized on the axle then they will be visibly abraded and scored by turning against the mazak of the chassis block casting; and in both cases there will be (most likely black) metal fines in evidence. Because this is the driven axle, any excessive movement or wobbliness will tend to cause wear to the axle gear, which might eventually be enough that it can disengage from the intermediate gear which may account for the stalling.

I feel your best bet is to apply to Hornby service for assistance. Whatever has gone awry on that axle, the damage is likely to be to multiple components, and the best bet is probably to replace the chassis.
