C&WR
Interesting photos. I cant help thinking of Bon JOvi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" when I see the feller in the cowboy hat mind! I spent some time in Costa Rica a few years back & there was similar street running in the capital city. Not as much emphasis on health & safety, though... Sir Ray
Also, Railpace Magazine Sept 2012 has an article on street running in Brooklyn It did, and the guy who took the pictures posted on RR.net (where I pointed out to him RailPace "blotted" out the graffiti on the gondola in one of the images of the car-float crossing to Brooklyn). Anyway, there might not be all that much Street running on what is now the Port Authority's (PA) NYNJ railroad. 1) Besides a few on-line industries (IIRC, just Yi-Pin, the NYCTA via the old South Brooklyn 39th St yard and whatever loads in the 50th street yard - former Bush Terminal yard), most freight was destined for the NY&A. 2) This freight was interchanged at the 65th St. yard (not far from Bay Ridge), necessitating the cool street running down 1st Avenue from the 50th Street float bridge/yard so beloved by Railfan photographers. 3) But, since the PA took over, they have begun floating from the 65th street yard - this yard (formerly a NH, then PC float yard) was refurbished in 1989 complete with new transfer float bridges, and in typical NY area railroad industry fashion sat idle for 2 decades[!] (NY Cross Harbor, then NYRR, then the private NYNJ in turn owned the 50th St/Bush float yard and didn't want to pay rent (to the MTA I think) to use the 65th street yard - when the quasi-public PA took over NYNJ that issue went away Therefore, most rail freight no longer needs to traverse 1st Avenue. 4) The big one - due to Hurricane Sandy, the Greenville NJ float bridges which feed the Cross-Harbor float operations were destroyed- therefore, to get the operations back up, the now unused bridge at 50th street was move across the harbor to replaced the ruined transfer bridges - no more floating into/out of 50th St. (there is a half-sunken float bridge still at 50th, but it is unlikely they will ever restore it for rail-float operations). 5) Therefore, AFAIK, only limited freight will be running up/down 1st Avenue going forward to serve a small set of customers (depending on what ever happens to the NYEDC South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, of course). shortliner
Oh, yes! I think I read every single post in the USA/Canada section - most have something of interest in them, and local-based info is always good and appreciated - lots of "generic" interest can be gleaned from magazines, but it is always "local knowledge" that fills out the gaps - and a very big "Thank you!" to people who do take the trouble to fill them in
Talltim
The article also mentions that the link to the Chinese food wholesaler Yi Pin at First Avenue & 40th Street removed as part of the track relaying was to be re-instated, although that was pre-Sandy of course. http://members.train...o/nychyipin.jpg http://goo.gl/maps/hTT0Y
dave1905
Actually when you are trying to move oversize loads of plate steel down a road with cars parked along it at 1am in the morning, street running isn't as fun as it looks. 8-) When I worked on the former MP Baytown Sub, it was a former interurban line so had street running in several places. Unfortunately it was all done at night, so no pictures.
trisonic
You've forgotten a couple of things about us dweebs, Dave. We don't care about crew/resident, hardships/noise/inconvenience all we care about are good photos/interesting loco's/something crazy so that we have something interesting/critical/controversial to discuss/argue about. Here's another nice night shot: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=412469&nseq=53 Let's pray that no Service was interrupted..... Best, Pete. Pacific231G
This is probably absurdly obvious but it's well worth exploring these locations with Google Maps and Street View. I've just done so with the Arkansas Midland line in North Little Rock and there's lots of details of disused and no longer connected trackage along Brother Paul Drive with rusting track bumpers and then on Arkansas Ave. the line passing through an area of presumably poorish low density housing. I noticed that the wooden Railroad Crossing signs (no flashing lights) on the ends of the side streets crossing Arkansas Ave, had the words on both sides so you'd see them on the left hand side of the road when you're moving away from the RR. To save the search It runs from the Highway 156 crossing at 34deg 45.205N 92deg 13.094W to the current end of track on the south side of Brother Paul Drive at 34deg 45.168N 92deg 15.277W The old tracks continue for a couple of hundred yards more but appear to be on a different alignment. kamerad47
Here is a couple more pics I took. The gondolas are being transload ,they are loaded with shreaded scrap iron & reload into 20' sea containers & being trucked out to port newark . The NYGL has no more industries to work they transload out of there yard. They ownly have about 1 mile of track they street run to the interchange which is the NJT main which NS has the rights to run.
