AberdeenBill
Hi all, I refer you to the latest batch of Courtney Haydon photos on the RCTS site: http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/mysteryphotos/show.htm?img=G-186-03A Are the brackets/clips below the rainstrip for carriage destination boards? If so, I didn't know Hastings units had such things... Bill
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted January 3, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2013 I think in the era of their construction - 1956/7 - many SR emus still carried, or had the facility to carry, basic destination boards on the carriage side, so these would have aped that. SRman
I think Ian is right - they may never have been used on the Hastings units but they were there if needed.
talisman56
The Brighton Belle - prior to the 1969 'facelift' into BR Blue/Grey - always carried destination boards - as if you didn't know where it was going from the name of the train?

RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted January 4, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2013 It was for those poor confused souls going the other way... And given that these boards only provided the destination, not calling points, their use on the Hastings DEMUs was also a trifle pointless. Almost all down trains ended up at the seaside, while only a tiny handful went to Cannon Street instead of Charing Cross in the morning peak.

The only benefit might have been if they had identified which half of the train you were in. Otherwise you had to rely on counting the vehicles to establish whether you were in the front six for Crowhurst (long after the branch to Bexhill closed), St Leonards, St Leonards Warrior Square and 'astings or the back six for Frant, Wadhurst, Stonegate, Etchingham, Robertsbridge, Mountfield and Battle. DY444
A bit OT but still on the SR - I recall REPs/TCs carrying destination boards above the cab windows
