RMweb Gold martin_wynne Posted January 14, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2013 Hi Andy, I just posted a reply containing a link to http://00-sf.org.uk at: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/3422-eastwood-town-update/page-57&do=findComment&comment=912856 The link is working fine, but the mouse-over preview on it is very strange, having no relevance to that site or to RMweb: Is anyone else seeing the same in that post? p.s. preview shows the same is happening on the same link above. Martin.
Mod5
I get the same but if you click on the link it goes to the correct site.
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted January 14, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2013 Yes Martin. I have experienced that too, and not just on RMWeb. It seems to be an annoying new form of advertising based very loosely on the word in question.. Hopefully someone on here will be able to show us how to block it. I startred a thread o the subject but got no response: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/65969-unintended-links/
RMweb Gold martin_wynne Posted January 14, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2013 Yes Martin. I have experienced that too, and not just on RMWeb. You should be seeing them only if you browse the web site while signed out. These mouse-over pop-ups on the links on RMweb are intended to show a preview of the web page you will visit if you click the link, which won't usually be an advertisement unless someone posts such a link. But the one above seems to have gone wrong, previewing the wrong site. It's not an advertisement because you can't click it. regards, Martin.
Andy Y
Hmmm, that's a concern as something similar has been previously raised. The mechanism for the preview runs via a Wordpress plug-in. It would appear that this plug-in sometimes, if it cannot immediately access the site it's looking to preview returns an advert (via Wordpress). When I followed the link to Martin's post on here it showed as it should but obviously because it could preview the correct site. If the facility doesn't work as it should it will get removed so I'll keep an eye on it from this end. Yes Martin. I have experienced that too, and not just on RMWeb. It seems to be an annoying new form of advertising based very loosely on the word in question.. Hopefully someone on here will be able to show us how to block it. I startred a thread o the subject but got no response: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/65969-unintended-links/ Sorry Colin; I hadn't seen that. There is no advertising on here that should create advertising links from posted content known as Text Link Advertising (I hate it!) but it could appear if you happen to have downloaded some adware or even toolbars from the multitude of sites that push such downloads and it may give the appearance that we're advertising shoes, for example where the word shoe appears in someone's post. I can categorically assure we don't do anything like that and I'd suggest downloading a programme such as Lavasoft's Adaware and let it scan your system to see if there's anything on your system that shouldn't be. http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware.php# - the free version will do it but be careful not to download anything other than the basic version and don't download any other suggested programmes as you go through the process. RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted January 14, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2013 http://www.00-sf.org.uk Entering it as above gives a correct preview. Entering it without WWW gives the cooking advert!
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted January 14, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2013 Thanks Andy. I'll try that advice. I only get the problem on my PC and not the laptop, so I may well have something hiding in the PC hard drive. Cheers Colin
trisonic
No, I'm getting the right preview. Best, Pete.
RMweb Gold Tony_S Posted January 15, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2013 No, I'm getting the right preview. Best, Pete. Both versions work perfectly now.
RMweb Gold martin_wynne Posted January 15, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2013 Both versions work perfectly now. Do we know if it corrected itself, or did Andy intervene?
Andy Y
No intervention in this specific case so there does look to be some inconsistencies in the way these periodically appear.
John C
Andy also noted today if I scroll over a picture you get a preview of that picture
Andy Y
With immediate effect I've disabled the modification (which is a shame as it was a useful feature) because one advert which appeared was of illegal/inappropriate content. I can't run such risks of illegal/inappropriate content appearing (even if that's not where click on the link would have taken you). Disabling the modification caused the server to time out which would explain the brief interruption in service.
