I've enjoyed model railways since I got my Hornby Dublo 3 rail N2 with two wagons and a brake van for Christmash 1957. This developed into a 6' x 5' table layout in the living room. In the 1970's the loft was converted and I moved to 2 rail with a layout 19' x 10'.

I joined the Ulster Model Railway Club in 1968 in Roseland Place, Belfast and remained a member until I moved to Cork in 1998.

Myself and four friends set up Model Irish Railways in the early 1980s to supply 4mm kits, paints and transfers for NIR and Irish Rail prototypes.

I have also worked in Northern Ireland Railways from 1976 to 1992 in the Secretariat and Operations Divisions.

I have recently moved house so my layout is in storage. I am currently preparing a shed for the railway.

  1. Hattons didn't 'go under'. They closed down in a very impressive orderly manner, left no debts, made arrangements to have their projects completed by others, and there was still money left over for it's owners.
  2. Unfortunately small claims court require the postal address of the party you are claiming against. Back to square one.
  3. Which function makes the 'shaking a stick' sound? 😆
  4. Dublin Connoly. The RPSI occupy the forner GNR(I) locomotive shed. Photo from RPSI webpage showing preserved 2-6-4T No 4 alongside Irish Rail 201 class Co-Co
  5. £1.8m after paying all debts in full. I bet Norman Hatton never envisioned his wee shop being worth so much! Nice to see it all ending with money left over. Makes a pleasant change from most liquidations one reads about.
  6. For some reason this formula reminded me of A level further maths and the subject of 'dimensions' so I applied dimensions to this formula, and of course, it worked! Bore = inches Bore squared = inches squared. Stroke =inches Number of cylinders = no dimension Boiler pressure = pounds per inches squared Driving wheel diameter = inches. Apply these dimensions to the formula: inches x inches x inches x pounds/ square inches, divided by inches, gives an answer in pounds. I must get out more 😆
  7. There was a passing Badger though.
  8. They can't get the computer controlled tunnel doors open. 😆
  9. Y2K running 24 years late 😆
  10. My head hurts. Why does selecting the three you are not going to use, give a different answer to selecting the five you are going to use?
  11. I don't understand your maths. I thought that selecting which three to omit would be 8x7x6 =336
