westcountryman
Greetings Raymondo, You are doing a really cracking job of the Charlie, & it'll be a beaut by the time it's finished. It's just so much more satisfying than opening a box & having the exact same loco as everyone else. Like Darren says, the speed at which you can turn out kits is phenomenal, so all the best. Mind you, I hope your de-soldering skills are as good as your soldering ones! I thought it looked alright with the chimney on the dome aperture, you've just improved on Olly Bullied's design. He wanted a loco without any frills or fripparies, & you've just got shot of the dome, even he couldn't do that! I know that this loco is close to your heart, & I can't wait to see her rattling over the points on Tawbridge. Best of luck mate, & I know that she'll grace your stable of Southern/ BR SR locos. see you soon compadre Rob P.S:- How much is it worth for me not to tell everyone about the 'other' cock-up? Don't panic Grandad, your secret is safe with me! No-one need ever know
darren01
Hi Ray Glad you have sorted out the parts, the loco looking very good and even at this stage puts the Hornby one to shame!. Once it finnished all you need is a little model of yourself in it, good luck with the rest of the build and keep the photo coming. All the best Darren01
RAY NORWOOD
Hi All update I have sorted out the mistake with the chimney, I dont now what came over me doing that. I think it must have been tiredness. I have soldered the supports on the cab floor Soldered a plate over the clack velves, and the rain stripe alone the boiler top and cab. Soldered a plate on top of firebox for the safety velves. Hope it looks better now the chimney is off from the place were the dome should be. RAY70B It looks like you have the cover that goes over the clack valves on the wrong side they should only be on the right side, on my model the cover is missing as they were on a few Q1s towards the end
RAY NORWOOD
Hi David. Yes I now the opening for clacks is on the wrong side. I had put the wrap on the wrong way so I put a plate on both sides. The Q1 I am modelling is 33010 it was at Feltham from 1948 till 1964 then went to guildford in September 1964 and withdrawn from service in 22nd Novenber 1964. The info I have this plate was still on in 1959. The only diffence in this Q1 is the plate on the drivers side, modellers licence. RAY70B

RAY NORWOOD
TO DAY'S UPDATE I have changed my mind and decided to put in the compensated chassis. I have made up the High levels gear box with the Mashima 1024 motor. It was very fiddly to build. The very start of the chassis, put two axle bearings in under the cab, four spacers and smokebox saddle top Hear with the body on top Got the front running plate section on, bufferbeam and the bufferbeam riveted overlay. The two compensation beams put in place and then the riveted frame overlays on both sides I am very pleased the way it is turning out, being I had a bad start. Matloughe
Now that looks like a right Charlie! In all the best ways! You don't waste anytime do you Ray. I know who I will be harassing when I get around to doing my first kit for advice Seriously it looks really good - better then my Hornby Q1 - we'll have to have a comparison one day. darren01
Hi Ray Wow this has come along very well now and is looking very good, one thing if you go for the compensated chasse would you be able to get the wieght into it with out it upsetting the chasse too much?. Keep up the good work!. All the best Darren01
N15class
Hi Ray Wow this has come along very well now and is looking very good, one thing if you go for the compensated chasse would you be able to get the wieght into it with out it upsetting the chasse too much?. Keep up the good work!. All the best Darren01 I have found you need less wieght when using compensated chassis. As long as you do not put wieght outside the wheel base everything is fine. Keep up the good work!. All the best Darren01 Hi Darren I have been thinking very hard on the compensation as I had a disapointment on a early chassis (Kemaway chassis) from yeas ago. I did think about the weight and N15CLASS hit it on the nail. Thanks for the comment. I have found you need less wieght when using compensated chassis. As long as you do not put wieght outside the wheel base everything is fine. Hi N15CLASS I thourght the same as you with the weight over the driving wheels. Thank you for your thourghts. Hello Ray, Really starting to look the part, you will have charlie up and running very soon, well done cracking job. George Hi George Thank you for your comment. I dont think it is as good as your scratchbuilt locos. Thank you lads for your comments. RAY70B

RAY NORWOOD
small update Put on lower cylinder covers a the upper cyclinder covers, lamp irons, vacuum and steam pipes and the plates on the centre sandboxs. Also pipe work on the front and under the cab on both sides I have put a differnt coupling for the tender, I have put a plate on the cab end of the chassis with a hole and put a splite pin into plate from the back and put a spring on the pin and bend the end of the splite pin, on the tender solder springy wire underneath with a hook to couple onto the splite pin, the idea of this is so the tender is close coupled and when on a curve the tender will pull on the splite pin against the spring and goes back to normal when off the curve. Soldered the bar on the front for my sprat and winkle couplings. Took the wheels off the chassis, chassis and the body have had a wash in warm soapy water and now in the spray room for the primer. Hope all is clear. RAY70B
