RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted April 6, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 6, 2013 I came across some photos from my late father's effects. He was an avid GWR fan and we had relatives in South Wales so when we visited (by train) a quite few snaps were always taken. 4264 an 86J Aberdare shed engine. 6844 Penhydd Grange an 87F Llanelly shed engine 1436 an 82C Swindon engine
chrisf
Thanks for posting these, John. The Grange is at Cardiff Canton shed and I'm sure others will be able to nail the locations of the others. Chris
Welsh Yorkie
Doesn't that 42xx exude power and solidity. I would't like to get in the way of one! Lovely photos. RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted April 6, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 6, 2013 I'll have to see if I come across any more. I do remember when I was small the family sitting around my great grandfather's death bed waiting for his 'call to God', They were devout 'chapel' and that was the way it was done in those days. Several hours passed and I became impatient and bored so I took to sitting in the window looking at the shunting going on on the colliery across the road just up from Copper Pit Halt..(that evocative clatter of mineral wagon buffers ever present) http://www.flickr.com/photos/22543000@N04/4868929332/ The house can just be made out in the right distance in the block behind a tall telegraph pole.. I would be interested to know when passenger services ceased on that line, as I'm sure that I remember a short train would call. Probably a 'workmans' train. Apologies for going OT but a little wallow in nostalgia does the soul good!
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted April 6, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 6, 2013 Found another. Not sure what it is. Well it is a Castle! I think it might be 5042 'Winchester Castle' in a 'withdrawn' line somewhere.
