allan downes
Was thinking about building a small end to end layout and calling it "Derelict Row" Got 4 ft of it built already and another module ought to do it. Good Idea, bad Idea, what ? Cheers. Allan
RMweb Premium The White Rabbit Posted February 10, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 10, 2016 A layout or a diorama? I think perhaps a single length of track, liberally overgrown, with a single decrepit wagon at the end? It works for me. So often we model picture postcard scenes but well observed dereliction and decay can be a fascinating model (IMHO). It's a challenge as well, with lots of fine work (in both senses of the word!) required. Go for it Allan, you know you want to....
Edwardian
Hmm, Allan Downes proposes to build a layout, and asks if it's a good idea! Is it a good idea? Are bears Catholic?

Edwardian
I think I may have got that wrong. Is it something to do with Popes in the wood? No, that's not it either. But surely, if the bears were Catholic, they would eat fish on a Friday, but not you, making that a good day for a walk in the woods?
allan downes
On a roll hear with another dereliction scene - an abandoned staion which will be sitting on a length of abused platform with a road over bridge one end, and a derelicy signal box at the other. Loads of overgrowth and weeds are planned and just sent for a Greenscene grass applicator which I'm told is the best for the price. Anyway, here's just over a days work. Cheers. Allan.

allan downes
Here's the signal box, or what's left of it, to go with the derelict station scene. This was taken on top of the Bentley coz it was raining outside. Cheers. Allan
Sweven
Greta work as usual Allan. A bit of Bentley 'C'Arnage.

Without you we wouldn't have even got off the starting line. A quarter of a million thanks to you all. Cheers. RMweb Gold teaky Posted February 19, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2016 We wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't worth looking at and wasn't so entertaining.
allan downes
Just a few set up test shots. Not too sure about that bridge though. Cheers. Allan.
RMweb Gold teaky Posted February 20, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2016 I like the look of the bridge but I wonder if it has sufficient bulk and if the parapet is tall enough? It might look OK on its own in countryside but next to a station your question caused me to compare the platform and parapet heights. Perhaps you could just disguise it with ivy and buddlea to add to the dereliction?
allan downes
As built it only represents a single track bridge designed more for farm traffic than anything else and the reason it's there is to help frame the model. It will be suffocated beneath heavy foilage however so maybe that might work. Thanks for your thoughts anyway. Cheers. Allan.
RMweb Premium The White Rabbit Posted February 20, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20, 2016 As an alternative for anyone modelling something similar, how about a footbridge and two trees? The footbridge could have missing planks in the decking & rusting struts about to fall off and clobber a local cat stalking the wood pigeons through the long grass. The trees, free from regular pruning, could have got out of hand and serve the same function as a scene break. Judging by the disused and derelict parts of the stations on my current commute, you could add some missing platform edging slabs and some 10-30' scrubbby trees growing from the platform surface. Brambles and nettles anyone? The running in board could perhaps use some holes in the face. I helped someone replace a board once and the face was utterly rotten (and sagging in the middle) but the letters and uprights were still solid. (That's not to run down Allan's representation, I'm sure different boards rot in different places).
allan downes
First stage greenery test shots. I used a Greenscene's static grass applicator for this - brilliant bit of kit and knocks the Nock Grassmaster into a cocked hat at half the price but be warned, a bag of fibres goes nowhere and I used two on just the platform surface alone ! Cheers. Allan
RMweb Gold ianLMS Posted February 22, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 22, 2016 Beautifully done! How was the ivy made?
allan downes
Beautifully done! How was the ivy made? I think it's called brack, a natural leaf seen on catkins. Anyway, having now found a new supplier, Greenscene can now supply it again as at one time it became unavailable. Cheers. Allan
allan downes
Derelict station. Second stage greenery. Here we used Noch 12mm fibres 'fired' through Greenscene's static grass applicator and, in my opinion, the best grass applicator on the market for the price of around 80 quid. There's more over growth to come yet, bushes and stuff, and a small one loco derelict engine shed is underway which will butt up as a separate module against the signal box end of the scene. Cheers. Allan.
allan downes
Today we finished off the derelict station scene, four bags of fibres, a load of Noch leaves and ivy and two bottles of superglue. Don't ever say it's a kids hobby anymore ! Cheers. Allan
RMweb Gold teaky Posted February 24, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 24, 2016 Flippin' 'eck! Weeds grow fast in your neck of the woods Allan. And an engine shed has popped into existence too. Like it.
