Miss Prism
Not sure exactly when some of the Buffalos started to be autofitted, and the extended-tank ones rebuilt specifically for autowork didn't appear before 1925 IIRC, and most of them went to the Plymouth division. It depends a bit on what you mean by 'around 1925'. I would imagine the local runs from Newton (Exeter and back, etc) were still the province of Steam Railmotors until the late '20s, but how many of them if any were actually allocated to NA I don't know. That leaves just the Ashburton and Brixham branches as autofitted, which I think were worked only by 517s. As far as I know, autotrains did not work the Mortonhamptead, Kingsbridge and Kingswear services. The Wild Swan 1921 loco allocations book could probably provide some extra clues however. According to the RCTS, they began in 1915: 1915: 1271 1917: 728, 1168, 1169, 1235, 1252, 1284, 1600 1918: 1265 1921: 1269 1923: 738, 1147, 1234 1928: 753, 1256, 1570 1929: 1167, 1567 1930: 1247, 1254, 1278 From the 1921 allocations book: Of those fitted by 1921, only 1265 and 1269 were at Newton Abbot, most of the rest being at Laira. Four other non-fitted ones were also at NA at theis time, 737, 1176, 1617 and 1654. The later extended smokebox and rectangular window variety included 738, 1167, 1234/5/52/65/9/71/84, 1567/70 and 1600. NA had the folllowing 517s in 1921: 205, 217, 1439, 1440, 1467. There were no railmotors there in 1921, the nearest being No 38 at Truro and No 72 at Exeter. Nick
Miss Prism
Thanks Nick for filling in the books detail that I don't have ready access to at the mo. Anyway, it would seem that there were at least two autofitted Buffalos at NA during that time. I'm a bit surprised there weren't more railmotors in the vicinity, since they did appear on the Teign valley line in later years, and worked the mainline in earlier years. buffalo
Just noticed a 1926 allocations list in the back of The Great Western in South Devon which has 1176, 1286, 1562 and 1650 at NA, none of which were auto fitted. Many of the fitted ones were still at Laira. 517s present at NA were 571, 838, 1158 and 1466. Still no railmotors, but there were now two at Exeter, 74 and 82. RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted June 22, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 22, 2013 Many thanks all. The original question was Newton Abbot DIVISION. IE. The auto fitted locos in South Devon in particular, but also those in SE Cornwal. I never thought about looking in the back of the GW in S. Devon. Can anyone identify which locos allocated to Laira or Plymouth were auto fitted please. Thanks again for your help. SS
buffalo
...Can anyone identify which locos allocated to Laira or Plymouth were auto fitted please... My list of auto-fitted Buffalos (1076 class) above is complete so, bearing in mind the date of conversion, just compare it with the 1926 allocations in the S. Devon book, then add the 517s. Another possibility is the 2021 class, but the only one I can see in the list is 2125 which doesn't appear to have been fitted. Nick edit - correction, of course not all 517s were fitted. Of those in the 1926 list: all at Exeter were fitted, except 845 none at NA were fitted (1466 was fitted in 1931) 1439 at Ashburton was not fitted The sole metro, 621, was not fitted.
