FelixM
Hello, may I first introduce myself: I am 23 years old, a student at Technische Universität Berlin and also working for the Chair of Track and Railway Operations. An interest in the Great Eastern Railway have let me come round regularly on here. Tuesday I visited Maschen marshalling yard near Hamburg as a guided tour specially for students. They showed us their large area and one of the two hump control towers. I took a lot of photos and even made two short films which I have uploaded to flickr and put English descriptions at. Before and after Maschen we went a bit through Hamburg and also took photos there. You can view all photos here: Please read all the descriptions which contain a lot of information I cannot repeat in this topic because it would be too much. As a teaser look at this: IMG_2098 von – FelixM – auf Flickr IMG_2130 von – FelixM – auf Flickr IMG_2146 von – FelixM – auf Flickr Kind regards Felix
Sir Madog
Felix, nice pictures! I remember visiting Maschen yard shortly after it was opened in the late 1970´s. I was a member of a group of students invited by Deutsche Bundesbahn to take a one day tour of all facilities, including spending a few moments "behind the wheel" of a class 290 Diesel shunter. It bwas some experience!

Tim Synge
Felix - I was really interested to see this. I took part in a school exchange and spent 10 days in Jesteburg, south of Hamburg, in 1978. One of the organised trips was a visit to Maschen and I remember being taken to a large signal box or control tower overlooking the yard and being amazed at the scale of it all. It is great to be reminded of it. Do you know whether it is open to the general public or only to organised gropups? mfG Tim

FelixM
Hi everyone I have been to another marshalling yard last week, this time Seddin southwest of Berlin. I am afraid I was told that taking photos wasn't allowed except at some special places so the outcome are relatively few photos. Album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/91875255@N05/albums/72157664011391102 Again I have taken two short films with my photo camera of wagons rolling down the hump. It was an impressive sight. admiles
Nice to see a Kof II shunting tractor still in use. Must be getting quite thin on the ground these days?
