RMweb Premium 21C123 Posted July 28, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 28, 2013 Hi all I have recently bought a 2nd Bachmann class 4 tank 80121, and very nice it is too. Comparing it to my older 80032 while putting on the footsteps it appears to have a box missing on the right hand side behind the centre step and near the end of the lower pipework. and compared to the real 80135 Looking at Hattons and Rails pictures they also don't have the box. So any idea what it is for ? Has it been deliberately missed by Bachmann or is it a mistake ? Roger
34theletterbetweenB&D
Could it be the AWS battery? These were fitted by allocation according to the routes the locos worked on, so these are one fitting that can vary within a class, and over time. RMweb Premium 21C123 Posted July 29, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 29, 2013 I don't think it's big enough for an AWS battery box, it seems to be part of the injectors ? I'm not sure what it is..... Roger
34theletterbetweenB&D
Further thought, there was a fashion on BR for fitting 'strum boxes' - essentially filter sieves - to prevent solid matter in the water entering the injectors and thus potentially the boiler. The only reason I know about this is from the memoirs of a couple of engineers whose general conclusion might be summarised as 'an answer looking for a problem' when these devices began to be fitted to Doncaster pacifics.
