RMweb Gold TomE Posted September 4, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 4, 2013 Hi all, Just stumbled across a very interesting development from Sony, high quality lenses that can be used independently of the controlling smart phone, or as a separate camera in their own right. http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/09/03/sonys-new-iphone-compatible-cyber-shot-lenses-set-to-launch-this-month-starting-at-250?fb_action_ids=569192306475140&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=other_multiline&action_object_map=%7B%22569192306475140%22%3A374333706026365%7D&action_type_map=%7B%22569192306475140%22%3A%22og.likes%22%7D&action_ref_map=%5B%5D Could prove useful for layout photography in confined or awkward spaces! Alastair-I
Could be useful, but you still need to get your device very close to the lens module - NFC has a very short range.
RMweb Gold TomE Posted September 4, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 4, 2013 There is a more in-depth review now up on the same website, which seems quite positive: http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/09/04/first-look-sonys-iphone-compatible-qx10-and-qx100-cyber-shot-lenses Sounds like the connection is peer-to-peer Wifi rather than NFC so the range should be sufficient for layout photography. The big question is will the specs allow for up close photography of layouts. Either way, the concept certainly has promise I think. Tom.
Alastair-I
I've had a look at the Sony site and it does look like it will work with both NFC and Wi-Fi, but more easily with NFC. No indication of the range, and all the demonstrations show the units close-coupled to the device. Now if they could just do the same, but forget the lens and just include an M42 mount.. ..
