Barry M
I'm starting to acquire a few 94XX Pannier Tanks for my Bromsgrove layout. Probably all will need re numbering and repainting. I took the attached picture of the cab side of a recently acquired Farish 94XX - please can someone clarify the red 'C' above the running number? I will need to order transfers/decals.....is it denoting a weight restriction? Or Power classification or such like? Also, was the shed number shown on the cab side at all? Any other information on detailing would be gratefully received. Thanks. Barry
lightengine
The letter was a quick indicator to crews of the tractive effort of the loco. There was Ungrouped, A, B, C, D, E and Special.
lightengine
The red dot applied to the 94XX locos denoted an axle weight of up to 20 tons.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted September 10, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 10, 2013 Shed codes were on a plate fixed to the smokebox. During your period I think Bromsgrove probably had three different codes. When the first 94xx tanks arrived it was probably still 21C, later becoming 85F and then 85D. Barry M
Thanks both - great info. Trust me to pick a place and period where the shed has 3 different numbers! Barry
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted September 10, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 10, 2013 I think that the changes would have been early 1958 and late 1960.
Barry M
Yes - Bromsgrove was 21C until 1958, then 85F until 1961, then 85D after that. Oh well, I'm sure it took them a while to change all the plates over! Thanks again. Barry
lightengine
Just a quick look through my shed codes book I don't see any 94xx allotted 21c in 1955. In fact all the 94xx were 81through to 88 in 1955.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted September 12, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 12, 2013 I would estimate late 1956 as the time when 8400-06 were transferred to Bromsgrove.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted September 12, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 12, 2013 I would estimate late 1956 as the time when 8400-06 were transferred to Bromsgrove. Sounds about right - they were definitely there (as at 21C) in 1957.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted September 12, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 12, 2013 Have you got the Railway Roundabout 1958 DVD? There's about 10 minutes of Lickey on that. Fantastic mix of locos and stock. When it was filmed 5226 was being tried on the bank and there was a mix of Jintys and 94xx. Coaching stock on Class 1 trains varied from LMS Period 1 to Portholes, Gresley, Thompson and Mk1s.
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted September 20, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 20, 2013 Rex Christiansen's book 'Railway Roundabout' http://www.amazon.co.uk/Railway-Roundabout-Rex-Christiansen/dp/0711024561/ref=sr_1_17?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1379715323&sr=1-17&keywords=rex+Christiansen has a few pictures taken on 20th April 1957. These include the Bachmann's 3F 0-6-0 43762 on shed at Bromsgrove with a 21C shedplate and 8406 banking with a Jinty.
