But residents of the inner-city apartment building might not have access to their cars for weeks while the lift, the only car access to the basement, was repaired, Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander Dominic Scarfe said.

"There's some reasonably expensive cars down in the basement that won't see the light of day for a little while," Commander Scarfe said.
