East Lancs. loop line

Recommended Posts

Hello chaps,

I have recently started modelling again after 30 odd years and find that there is a lot of catching up to do.

Do any of you more knowledgeable enthusiasts know how to go about getting track plans?

I would like to build a representation of Great Harwood station/goods yard etc., on the east lancs loop line(between Rose Grove and Blackburn), but can't find any decent maps that show the layout of the track in any sort of detail. There are a few photos online and because I live in the town I know of the route the railway took but I am too young (48) to remember the actual station and other buildings.

Other local people don't seem to have taken many pictures of this subject from what I can gather. Any help would be appreciated.

Rob.

Hi Rob and welcome,

Can't help I'm afraid except for some obvious things.

Try:-

Google maps and over laying track work;

The local library;

The East Lancashire Railway;

The National Railway Museum at York's archive;

Posting a question in the section "Railways of the North West in 50s/60s";

Posting in "UK Prototype Questions";

Using your imagination as space WILL force compromises;

Or even changing your RMWeb name to "RelentlessRob"!

Kev.

Nice link - Thanks and good luck.

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum. You should find plenty of advice and inspiration on here, though sorry I can't help with your query this time.

Thanks for the welcome. I've looked on this forum from the outside many times and got answers, that's why I decided to join. I only can help with my limited knowledge.

Rob,

It would be worth having a look at:

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

They have 1:2500 maps of Great Harwood for 1893, 1911-12, 1931-32 and 1957. Allowing for the occasional oversight by the OS mappers* these would show the development of the track plan in detail over the 60+ years.

If one of these years is appropriate for your modelling period then you can purchase a copy from Old Maps.

David

* On the 1:2500 map of Ellesmere (Cambrian Railways) there is a crossover missing which makes a complete nonsense of the track layout!
