Here's a video depicting traffic movements from the early sixties.
A class 20 in charge of ex Gresley suburban stock arrives at the north bay and the runs around its train whilst a couple of four car DMU's come and go in the main station.
Recorded under the new lighting in the train shed.

This is a re-worked scene from '....Suburban Trains 1' published last week. There are some trains passing in the background, added to the original scene.

The original scene was videoed on the layout at the north end of the Main Station. The brick arches and the upper level of the layout were removed and replaced with a video of the Cleveland Hills.

In this version, the background trains were videoed on another part of the layout and the background was removed.

The trains were then added to the original scene.

Just one other thing, the Class 20 locomotive in the main scene is the same one pulling the goods train in the background.......

This is a quote from the specification I wrote when Trenholme Junction was built 20 years ago.
'To be able to take positions on the layout and see a train approaching but, because it was far enough away, it was not possible to recognise what it was until it got closer, as in real life.'
Things have moved on since I wrote this part of the spec but the finished project has fulfilled the brief. With the advancement in video editing and enhancements, the ability to add width and height to the layout was unforeseen and a wonderful added dimension I could have only dreamt of when the project started.
During this year many changes have taken place on the layout to further enhance the production of the model and real world videos and this one shows that off.
An 08 shunter moves a rake of parcels vans from the from the NW carriage sidings and places them in the parcels platform.
Two expresses thunder past originating in the distance, mainly composed of the many coaches which have been recently added to the layout.
And finally, some local and stopping trains come and go at the Main Station.

This video was shot on the North Station upper level on Trenholme Junction.
It was also shot in and around the village and surrounding area where I live.
There are 32 individual video clips on 17 tracks.
The video clips were shot using a Gopro 10 camera at 5.3k 50 and 4k50.
The stills were recorded using an iPad Gen 4.
The video you see was created using the Vegas Post production suite.
Its a cloudy, windy day.

Update to the Scenes Library.
During last summer (2022) I was busy building a video library of scenes of both model and real world compositions.
The library has scenes of backgrounds, foregrounds, roadways with moving vehicles, real and model bridges and much more.
When I make a video on the layout, I can add these scenes into the video and add the trains from the rest of the video to them.
All of the scenes in the library can be altered to suit the weather and other conditions so making flexible and interesting variations.
Building on the library, during this summer (2023) there has been substantial work carried out to change the physical layout in order to build further libraries.
In this video, there are seven new scenes, most have had the upper level removed to create a wider look and to add different backgrounds to that of the physical layout.
The scenes depict trains passing through the junction opening with a view from the Lower East Station, passing the Lower Marshalling Yard and the Diesel Shed and arriving at the Main Station. The train then pauses before setting off and disappearing into the distance.
The train is headed by Class 24 D5100 and hauling GUV vans. All the vehicles have close couplings.
Note also the water crane outside the engine shed in the Diesel Shed scene. I got a Hornby Dublo train set for Christmas in 1958 and this was the first accessory I bought for it with my pocket money. It was 1/9d I think, and it’s been on every layout I’ve built ever since.
Many more fixed scenes will by added to library over the coming months.

There was quite a bit of work involved in the special effects I made for the Christmas greeting card I produced last week. It seemed a shame not to use it again, so this video has several trains coming and going in the snow.

Here are two new scenes which have been added to the library.
They are recorded at the neck of the Lower Marshalling Yard and along the headshunt towards the four into two junction.
Bushes and trees waving in the wind, clouds drifting across the sky and birds flying.

At larger stations, when coaching stock was locomotive hauled, there was a 'station pilot' which moved the coaches to and from the station to the coach sidings for cleaning and storage.
Many different locomotives were used for these operations.
In this video, a Class 5 0-6-0 Shunter, with its match truck, leaves the Diesel Shed and picks up a rake of Mark 1 coaches from the Lower East Station Carriage Sidings and places them in the North Bay of Main Station.

The videos are a merging together of the model and the real world.
The layout is a very large two tier double oval and is 54 feet long (16.5 metres) and 15 feet wide (4.5 metres).
The layout was built with long distance shots in mind.
To give the impression of width and depth, the background is made from videos shot around where I live and are merged into the model using a video editor.
Using video gives another dimension to the static backgrounds usually seen on model railways.
The trees and grass are blowing in the breeze, birds are flying in the sky, insects buzzing around and the clouds are moving in the sky.
This video is mainly made on three of the four straight sections in order to give the impression of a long straight leading up to and away from the Main Station.

In this video both main line passenger trains pass non-stop through the Main Station, a shunter removes parcels vans from the east carriage sidings and places them into the Parcels Platform for loading while a goods train and an empty Royal Mail TPO passes by on the goods roads.
