Garston Bridge? Or maybe not

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to this forum and but have posted a number pictures on 'How realistic are your models' and as some of you might be aware I started a blog on my layout Garston Bridge, a diesel depot based in the Liverpool area (or anywhere in the northwest) in the late 60's with green an blue diesels.

This is my first attempt at modelling after returning to the hobby after 20 years and my first real attempt on this forum apart from by blog, and much has changed. The initial track plan took a while to decide on but after much internet searching an reading of books I finally had what I wanted. (Or thought I did!!) The idea was to build two base boards at a time due to lack of space for the time being each being 3' x 20" an then when the house move happens the new garage or loft will be its new home so depending on how big the new house is will determine the overall size I have to play with in the end.

The layout is DCC as i have a couple of dcc sound loco's and I managed to get my head around the electrics (well think I have and what's done so far seems to work). So Garston Bridge was a go, track laying started and ballasting etc but there just seamed to be something missing would a depot layout hold my interest or anyone else's? There are lots of fantastic depot layouts out there already but there was something nagging away at me.

It wasn't until I was looking through all the forums and I came across Bradfield Gloucester Square that memory's of being a kid at Lime Street came back to me, the best being the centre roads were there where class 08, 31, 45, 47 all stabled ticking over or shut down with their spirax valves popping away. Even when I was still happy with it being a depot layout I had already bought a Bachmann 85!!

So that's when I decided Garston Bridge was no longer going be a depot, I was happy with my stabling point and I wanted to keep this as well as two entrance departure roads, but the fuelling point had to go to make way for two more entrance departure roads and a single siding to stable a couple of locos or station pilots. The fuelling point was ripped up along with ballasted track, nightmare and that's were I'm up to now the new track is ready to be laid. As with the original I want the layout to have that late 60's dirty feel with grimy br green and slightly cleaner 'rail blue'. The plan is to have three entrance

/departure roads an a road to and from the stabling point. The station will hopefully consist of platforms 1 & 2 for the expresses and 3, 4 & 5 for cross country and local services. There will be a third road stabling point between platforms 3 & 4 and the line adjacent to platform 5 will be for stabling and access to the stabling sidings. So do I stick with the name or change it? Suppose that's the next decision. Below are a couple of shots of the original depot stabling point which will be staying and the fuelling point including D6992 the last diesel to be refuelled at Garston Bridge.

Hope this will be of interest and feel free to comment and add advice and thoughts many hanks for looking.

Well the new track has been laid and the whole board section rewired, tested and a short!! :-( the old section is fine but the new track layout just isn't happy, so hopefully it'll be sorted tonight or by the weekend. Once fixed I'll try and take a couple more pictures of the (slow) progress so far.

Great looking layout hope you get your problem fixed

David

Many thanks, sorted the short last do the station approach is up an running, well as much as it can be on a 3ft board. I'll post a couple more pictures later hopefully.

A couple of pics of the slow progress so far, sorry about the poor quality. Think I'll carry on with this section for a bit, I'm not going to be using point motors so I'm thinking of going down the line of 'tube in wire' the only problem being where do I fix the levers? It's very unlikely the layout will be exhibited (there are far better layouts than this so don't think it will cut it) so do I fit them at the front, or do I set it up just incase and have them behind the back scene? Once I figure that out I can get the track ballasted and weathered, then I also want to make a start on the road bride, back scene and signal box

Nothing done today after work but thought I'd show a couple of pics of the fleet, I've got a couple of 20's,3 08's, an anothe 40 aswell as an 85 but I haven't weathered or detailed these yet. All the pics below are of the diesels I've bought, detailed and weathered myself although, apart from the blue 37, I haven't renumberd any yet. The 40 an the 47 are both fitted with Legomanbiffo sound chips and are amazing. Hope you all like the pics and go easy with me on the weathering I just dived in an had a go!!

Not much progress, mercontrol wire in tube parts arrived today, but after spending most the night just trying to get one point to work, which it didn't, gave up and started on the road bridge which will be the scenic break. If anyone has any tips or in fact knows how to get the old wire in tube working via under the board please let me know.

Many thanks Paul

Finally got to spend a couple of hours tackling the wire in tube on the points, two working two to go on the first board. Hopefully I can get the other two sorted this week then I can start on the road bridge and retaining wall. Couple of pics from the other day when mucking about, I'll take some of the underneath once the points are working (hopefully working)

Finally finished the wire in tube for the points!! Well so I thought until I realised there were 5 point not 4 :( so the last will hopefully be sorted tonight if there is enough wire left. Couple of shots of the underneath not the tidiest I'm afraid.

Thought I'd do a few shots to show how it can look if you use a lot of imagination, busy at the approach to the station as an A5 arrives with an express from Euston as a peak leaves with a trans Pennines service to York. Two type 3's wait in the holding siding for a diagram to take them back home!! I did say you'd need a good imagination. Just behind the 85 will be the site of the signal box, next to this, where the 08's are, is another holding siding off the up main.

Started on the bridge tonight (I know I should of finished the last point but..) and have marked out the ply for cutting at the weekend, the old Hornby viaduct is going to be chopped up an fitted in and will be a disused tunnel entrance to lines which are now replaced by the signal box. I've also started weathering the Hornby 08, still much to be done on it including detailing, but couple of pics of the job so far.

Nothing done at all over the last week, having serious doubts over the track plan, I'm very tempted to start all over again from scratch, going to carry in with the bridge though as no matter what I decide I can use this. :-(

Been having a muck around with new track plans, the station layout is the same but I've lost the sidings, I want it to be as realistic as possible so can't really justify three small sidings like I've got at the moment. By loosing them I can have more of a raised backscene as I want that 'station in a cutting' look. The loco stabling point I'm thinking, depending on space to be an old steam shed being used to stable diesels. I wanted goods lines to as I don't just want passenger stock so I've added these which will start to drop as they approach the station. It looks a big project but it's something I'm planning on doing over years so want to get it right before I start. Any advice as always very welcome.

Well after much thinking I've finally decided on most of the track plan and what I finally want out of the layout. I want something as realistic as I can do within reason so up to know I've ruled the station area out, there is no way I can build a station big enough or realistic enough. I can build the approach to a station with a junction, with roads off leading to a small mpd. The mpd will be a steam shed recently being used to store and fuel diesels (I know my original plan was a depot but that was going to be a large shed but the layout only had loco movements) this idea will allow me loco stabling aswell as passing DMU's, expresses and freight traffic. I must admit I just dived in at first an just wanted to get started on ballasting, weathering the track etc, but I'm going to go slow this time and do things properly. My only delemer is do I go down the line once again of wire in tube or just risk electric point motors!! A few pics below of some track thrown down and the nearly finished 08. I detailed it today just need to finially finish the weathering off on it. The 37 just needs lamp hooks adding and biffo sound chip.

Some nice mucky locos you have there.

Cheers, I love making them mucky, I just use weathering powders and then paint the chassis an dust with powder whilst it's still wet. I haven't mastered the airbrush yet so just use that to seel with varnish. Thanks again for the compliments.
