Digitrax sound decoders. New 6 series launched

It appears that Digitrax have launched a new series 6 decoder that addresses a lot of the issues raised by previous decoders from this manufacturer.

General blurb about the most interesting of the pair appears http://www.digitrax.com/products/sound-decoders/sdxh166d/

The only thing I can see that rather limits them is the size but having had some bad experiences with Digitrax not doing what it says on the box, I wonder if the range is worth a look and indeed a fresh start.

I have a PR1 and the Sound Depot suggests a PR3. I note that Sound Depot now contains a sprinkling of British recordings some of which have been upgraded but have been there for some years.

Digitrax have received very little mileage on here and justifiably so but these new decoders might redress the balance and, at $75 MSRP including speaker and retaining the undoubted benefit of being considerably more open source in terms of sounds and project adaption, I fancy a try.

Does anyone stock these new decoders I wonder and does anyone have a working PR3 they would part with.

Suggest joining the DigitraxSound group on Yahoo.   Within that is access to a number of tools for building Digitrax sound projects which are considerably more advanced than those supplied by Digitrax, plus access to various sound projects which haven't found their way onto the Digitrax website.  Quite a few of the UK sounds on the Digitrax website are horrible old basic things.

I've not heard a version-6 decoder, so no comment on whether its a big improvement from their old "mid-market" sound quality.

I have been in the Digitrax Sound Yahoo group almost since it started. I had a bit of success with the original piggyback sound decoder, it is still in my N1. The usual problems with synchronisation and lack of available memory plus the growth of ESU more or less put paid to my continuing with Digitrax Sound. Add to that the subsequent offerings being actually worse........

But Digitrax are big enough and old enough to carry a lot of weight with me ( I use their command stations ) and the constant barrage on here about the price of sound decoders, perhaps it is time to put on a pointy hat and master the SPJ file construction to see if it adds a viable alternative.

What we don't want is all of us doing the same as it is counter productive. If nobody bites I will invest in the new year.

I have spoken with my local Digitrax supplier and, if Warley goes well with lots of Digitrax Zephyr sales, he is willing to invest in ordering some of these decoders along with an order for Zephyr's. The PR3 is about £66 so let us see what E Bay has to offer.

David,

Why wait for someone to drum up some orders when you could use a DCC specialist like Digitrains, who carry massive Digitrax  stock, including the PR3 at around £60?

Like you, I've tried hard to get something worthwhile out of Digitrax sound decoders and finally realised there's only so much time before one dies so I'm not wasting anymore of my share on them.

Good luck.

Thanks Paul for this heads up. There is some loyalty to my local shop and he does 'look after me' on price. I am not going to start anything on this until the new year anyway but I will at least know how my local supplier is fixed after Warley and, if he decides not to order Digitrax kit then i can make base with Digitrains in January without letting the local side down.

I appreciate your comment about not trying too hard on these Digitrax decoders, I wasted a lot of time and mental energy on CT Elektronik sl74's some years back and wished I hadn't. I see YooChous has seemingly mastered those. I think your involvement with Zimo is much more worthwhile anyway. Better to be a master of one thing than a servant of many.

I will post on here once I have succeeded in a useful decoder project for Digitrax. Whatever you do, don't hold your breath!!
