Haven't modeled for 20 years

Hello,

I'm been on RMweb for just under a year and have seen some great layouts and ideas. I haven't modeled for 20 years and I'm new to what's out there. As a youngest I've had a OO scale layout and it would be sad to start in another scale. So I'm planning to stay put with OO. I've decided to start modeling from scratch, a model of Marston Green station, as I remembered that station as a child, with the old signal box and level crossing. I haven't a space to build a layout at the moment and to do Marston Green to scale, I would need about 6 metres in length, before I even start to turning the layout into a fiddling yard. So a compromise may have to happen.

The period I'm planning to do is the 1950's, as I don't want to go down the electrification route. Also the old Marston Green station as I remembered, was on it's last legs – I so wished I took pictures at the time. Around the 50's Marston Green had sidings.

Still, I've made a start with a mock-up out of thin card, just to see if I'm getting the scale right. I've used old photos for reference from the net and www.warwickshirerailways.com has been a good starting point. See attached image.

If you have any reference to any images of the old station or any information that would be of help, I would be very please to hear from you.

Kind regards,

Mookie.

You may well have seen all these....

There's a couple of photos on Mark Norton's website - http://www.photobydjnorton.com/LocalStationsHtoO.html - nearly 2/3rds of the way down that page.

A lovely shot of life outside the station - http://www.photobydjnorton.com/MarstonGreenClr.jpg

Warwickshire Railways has a good selection as you note - http://www.warwickshirerailways.com/lms/marstongreen.htm

Hi Mookie and welcome,

That's quite some station mock-up there.

Have you seen some of the work in "Car structure modelling forum"?

(But serrating those vertical slats on your canopy must have taken some effort!)

Enjoy your stay in RMweb land,

Kev.

Thanks, I will take a closer look at the card structure modeling forum, as it seem card's the way forward for me. I'd looked at creating it in plasticard, but some examples of brickwork looked out of scale. The only concern of using card is painting it and it warping.

The mock up is printed on white paper and spray mounted on thin card and then cut out. It's only to see if the scales right and to check if it the best way to construct it.

I like many, study old photos to work out the scale. Then I draw it up in Adobe Illustrator, the print it out. I've bought some brick sheets from Metcalfe, just to see if it's any good to work with.

Kind regards,

Mookie.
