The Titfield Thunderbolt

The opening shot shows 34043 Combe Martin with some green Bulleid stock crossing Midford Viaduct in 1953. The Bulleid coaches must have been in Southern livery as British Railways did not start painting Southern Region coaches green until 1956.

Interesting, thanks for that, although I believe the film was shot in 1952 rather than 1953? The take certainly took several gos, as the S&D train was an ordinary service train, which wasn't under the control of the film makers. I think it took 7 or 8 attempts to 'get it right'.

'My grandfather built this railway for Titfield, not for Greenwich!'

'Perhaps there were not men of sufficient faith in Canterbury'

"Well, something's got to be done. Anymore weeks like these last few, and we'll be running at a profit"

'Excuse me sir, but we are running at a profit'

"This is dreadful. The next thing you know we shall be nationalised!"
