RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted January 21, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 21, 2014 Just for info. I had to visit B & Q today as SWMBO wanted to look at floor tiles .....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Anyway, I noticed 3mm underlay foam in a huge pack for just £22. I think this could be a good buy BUT I didn't check it would be ok with adhesives. When SWMBO isn't looking I might just pop back and check this out for my new layout project. peter220950
I'm currently using this stuff on my layout, some of which has been down for six months or so, and seems just the job. It's similar to the stuff used by Norman Solomon to lay track on, and is very cost effective. The material has been sitting in my loft for a couple of years without any deterioration. I use PVA, carpet fixing spray, or latex adhesives, having just rubbed cellulose thinners on a section it seems o.k, though I would try out using any spirit based adhesives for a while before using it permanently on a layout. The other advantage, if you use latex to ballast, instead of PVA, is a resilient track-base which kills sound.
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted February 25, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 25, 2014 The foam is called XPS. Not having seen this thread, I started another one. My supply (actually being used for its intended purpose) comes in 5mm thick sheets measuring 1000mm x 600mm with 18 sheets to a pack.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted March 2, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 2, 2014 Yep, I've used it to good effect on my last layout and will use it again on the next. I assume it is the stuff meant to go underneath laminate flooring?
steve22
I've seen this stuff and wondered a few times about its use as an underlay. The above pictures will certainly help many of us make our minds up.
