Although it isn't DCI per se, it shows the vertical pillar behind the brake push rods holding the short shaft. The prototype shaft is 2.5" diameter.

Thanks, that's now clear to me. Moving on - how far inboard should the sideframes be? Drawings suggest they should be flush with the end of the buffer beam, but if so there will be a lot of lateral play in the axles.

This kit is ex Coopercraft I believe.  The brake rod orientation may be reversed.  Check out Barry Norman's article in MRJ 174.

On this theme does anybody have a picture of the underside of the LMS 20t Slaters brake van. I just cannot figure out the exact layout of the brake gear and would also add that Slaters instructions are very mixed and the diagrams limited.

I have one at home, I'll try to take photos tonight.  I agree with you that the instructions for that kit are fairly miserable, I stopped work on it for 6+ months because I couldn't figure out the brake rigging...
