andyman7 Posted February 14, 2014 Share Posted February 14, 2014 I'm hoping some of the knowledgeable collectors out there can help me with sorting out the issue dates for the successive editions of the Tri-ang/Tri-ang Hornby Service Dealer booklets! For those perhaps less familiar with the Tri-ang range, the company appointed service dealers both in the UK and abroad to provide after-sales support, servicing and repairs to their products; from the mid-50s this was communicated by means of a Service Dealers address booklet that was included in all train sets and, until 1971, was also included with every locomotive or train pack. From 1972, the booklet became a folded A3 leaflet, covered Scalextric service dealers too and was only included in train sets (and Scalextric sets) but it is the booklets I'm most interested in. The first edition appeared (I think) in 1955 or 56; the last booklet edition was number 39 from 1971. This gives a re-issue rate of two or three editions a year (an update obviously being required every time an agency closed or moved, or a new one was appointed). There are some key factors that help in dating the booklets. Firstly, the trading and limited company names on the booklets - for example, Triang Hornby ones date from mid 1965 onwards; from 1967 the owning company becomes Rovex Industries Limited (whereas before it had been Rovex Scale Models Ltd); from 1970 it was Rovex Triang Ltd. The most helpful factor is that every locomotive and trainset also includes an operating manual, and these are date stamped; so, if a model or set turns up with all its original paperwork it is possible to benchmark the date at which that particular Service Dealer booklet was being issued. The problem, of course, is that at this juncture, in many cases the correct paperwork is either missing or mixed up - I have often acquired items with the incorrect paperwork included. The end result is of course that I have quite an extensive pile of orphan booklets, and quite a few models that this orphan paperwork could be correct for. In the case of the dated operating instructions, I have enough knowledge of the changes to individual models to be able to match these up with near perfect accuracy, but I don't have similarly comprehensive list of dates for the Servicing Scheme booklets, so I am turning to RMWeb for help. What I'd like, where possible, is if you have any original Tri-ang or Tri-ang Hornby sets or locos that are complete with their paperwork, could you please post the stamped reference number and edition of the Operating Instructions; and the Edition number of the Servicing Scheme booklet included with it. I realise that this is an extremely arcane request for most, but for those of us indulging in the operation of vintage Tri-ang equipment we can hopefully create a useful resource. As a starter for ten, I'll set down the info I can glean from the booklets I have to hand: R259080361 Sixteenth Edition manual paired with 20th Edition Servicing Scheme booklet (e.g. March 1961) R254270262 Nineteenth Edition manual paired with 23th Edition booklet (and Fifth Edition OPSS booklet - Feb 1962) R553221163 Twenty Second Edition manual paired with 27th Edition booklet (Nov 1963 - the day Kennedy was assassinated!) 29th edition - last 'Tri-ang Railways' booklet I have R157160965 Twenty Fifth Edition manual paired with 31st edition - first 'Tri-ang Hornby' booklet I have - Sept 1965 33rd edition - first 'Rovex Industries' booklet - 1967 35th edition - I have two versions, one marked 'Tri-ang Hornby'; and one marked 'Triang Hornby Minic' These must be from 1969, because.... 36th edition is marked 'Rovex Tri-ang', so would be from 1970 39th is the last booklet, and the first to be marked also for Scalextric. You should be aware that there were multiple uses of some Edition Numbers. 26, 27, 31, 34, 35, 38 have at least 2 versions with different Print Codes! Things get easier from around Edition 47, when the Print Code has the date in it! The early SS "books" were in fact sheets... Tri-ang Railways Servicing Scheme Booklets. 1 P. Hammond 1954 2 P. It is possible that the later coded (7862) may have meant to have been Edition 4. As there is no Edition number on the leaflets, except the print code, there lies the question. 1955 covers print codes 6501 to 10000. 2 SSL/3/7828 Earlier 1955 3 SSL/3/7862 Mid 1955 Edition 41 is a 16 Page Booklet, the last of that format. 41 04/003/41 Later 1971 Hornby Railways and Scalextric Book, Official Service Dealers scroll. 16 pages Including Covers Good to see another listed.
