I've got a 1:35n2 (or is it 1/32n2) layout inspired by Monkton Farleigh started myself. Just don't ask when it will get finished though . The aerial photo helps to visualise things with your plan. I reckon it will work. Ian
RMweb Gold daveyb Posted December 5, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 5, 2009 Whilst not wrong, it would be uncommon for the line to go directly through an earth covered explosive store house (ESH). It would be very unusual (unheard of) to have a traffic route (as opposed to a supply/specific to shed route) going through. Unless specifically built for work in ESH (known currently as Cat C), the locos would not be allowed to enter the ESH, so the train might be allowed in (as seen in Bramley, Kineton here , Chorley, Glascoed here etc) but there would be a 'no locos beyond...' sign at a specific distance. There are other options - in some mines and mills there were air or fireless steam locos (though steam is still a source of heat). [ There are examples where the locos enter the ESH or at least the ESH area (the large wartime facilities at Box/Corsham leap to mind) but they are very care fully controlled. The map reference you give shows an area where I'd suggest the line goes around the shed and the paths at both ends would be trolley or man fed. This month's Narrow Gauge World has a brief article on the former RAF storage facility, now returned to quarrying, at Chilmark. If I can be of any help, give me a shout...
