Apex Industrial are handling the disposal of this batch of Aurizon locos. The list of Aurizon items they had for sale is:

- 4 x 421 class-Two of which are to be scrapped in Australia. One may stay out here, if not both of the other ones

- 5 x 422 class-One of which is to be scrapped in Australia (42209)

- 10 x CLF/CLP class, 1x ALF (ALZ) class

- 2 x FAM sleeping cars. I will have to check what the others are

 

I don't know if all are going to South Africa for rebuilding.-Most are, but a couple are staying out here, either for other purposes or to be scrapped. Some will be forwarded on to other areas though-the CLs and ALZ are to work on construction of a new Iron Ore railway in Cameroon.

Still clinging on, but only weeks to go. As the result of the downturn in iron ore prices, GWA have lost a major contract which will release 10 x 4300hp locos at the end of March, that will make these classic locos redundant. Seen yesterday 30 January 2015 working a loaded grain train from Gladstone to Outer Harbor in South Australia

An ironic little tale......

 

Just a few years ago in 2011, Arrium purchased the well advanced Peculiar Knob iron ore mine in South Australia from the Western Plains (WPG) mining group for approx A$346 million.

 

The wagons were already on order and my understanding is that these are leased from a Chinese group under the arrangement already in place with WPG.

 

Genesee & Wyoming Australia ordered 10 x 4300hp EMD-powered units to handle the traffic.

 

The full rail service started early in 2013 and sees 3 rakes in fairly constant use. The ore is roaded from the mine to a balloon loop at Wirrida adjacent to the Darwin to Tarcoola rail line form where its railed to Whyalla for export from Arrium's own port facilities.

 

In January, Arrium announced it would be mothballing the Peculiar Knob as a result of the dramatic drop in price for iron ore. At the time of writing the mine is still operating and the train still running, although they are expected to stop within a couple of months. Who knows what will happen to the wagons. The locos will probably be used to replace older power in the GWA fleet such as the GMs above. Unfortunately it is likely a number of drivers based at Port Augusta will be out of a job 

 

I was fortunate enough to spend a few days last week photographing these trains.

I will be in Adelaide early April and was hoping to see a few GMs and the 700 class, looks like I might be out of luck. It would have been nice to see a few still working.

Good link David to Sydney's new South West Link. Atleast this line has real sized trains running on it, which can be used on the rest of the Sydney System. Unlike the North West Rail Link, Bradfield would be rolling in his grave knowing that the double deckers can not be used on this line... Bradfield was one with vision, unlike our State Government and Gladys Buggered-up-again.

Yes you may have made your move just a tad late. There are only two 700s left in service and one of those is the regular Port Pirie shunter. Send me a message closer to your trip and I can probably provide an update on the situation. There should be a few CLF/CLPs around if no GMs.

Hello.

 

I went over to Forrestfield (eastern outskirts of Perth) this morning to see what, if anything, can be seen.

 

Below are a few pictures that I have taken - I am more interested in rolling stock than locomotives - but there don't seem to be (m)any good vantage points. Would be interested to know if there are any other or better - legal - vantage points to take pictures of the stock at Forrestfield or Kewdale yards. Most of these pictures were taken facing the sun so please excuse any flare or glare.

I'm not so sure about that Gary.  An enormous amount of work has been put in over fairly recent years into assessing the operational vs costs etc advantages and disadvantages of going single deck or double deck for new vehicle orders for the Sydney network and I know it has been done with considerable care and a lot of thought about which way things should go into the calculations having seen some of the input and asked some very basic critical questions about various aspects of it as it was being done.

 

Now I'm well aware - having used it daily during the peaks - of the load situation on such lines as the city loop in the centre of Sydney (I travelled regularly through Town Hall station in the morning peak) but there is far more to it than that and the work that was done has gone far deeper into matters than that.  The results of course don't suit everyone but nor do the economics of the various link lines that have emerged on the network over the past decade, often against hard fought financial battles.  So you might not like all that you see but as far as some of the lines are concerned I suspect you might be very lucky to actually be able to see them.

Freight returns to the Canberra line with a new weekly scrap metal train to Port Botany. It is operated by Espee Rail Services, the commercial subsidiary of the Australian Railway Historical Society ACT Division, using CFCLA equipment. The first train is seen here departing Queanbeyan last Friday, taken from a home made drone.

The venerable GM class are hanging in there. The iron ore contract that will release more modern power has about another four weeks to go and GWA seem happy to work the GMs until they have a failure. There are still three active examples based in Adelaide and on Easter Saturday two ventured out onto the Loxton branch line.

Hello.

Hopefully this is not deemed off-topic, but does relate to recording the contemporary scene in Australia.

I've been taking pictures of the railway in Western Australia for a couple of months and until this last weekend have had no real problems. Unfortunately I've had a couple of encounters this weekend - different days and places - with staff and private security wanting to know who I am (member of the public), what I'm doing (standing there with a camera: photographing the railway) and why (I'm interested in photographing the railway).

I don't believe I'm doing anything wrong but have been left with the feeling that I am. I'm usually in the same place at the same time on the same day at the weekends, yet only now has it suddenly become a problem for some people. I'm standing on public land, well clear of both rail and road, and not causing an obstruction, as far as I know.

I'm just wondering if other photographers / video recorders have encountered this questioning and what is the best way of dealing with it. For something that I was quite enthusiastic about I'm losing the will to carry on.

Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed. Thank you.

No you're not doing anything wrong. If you are in a public place (which will be defined in your state's Summary Offences Act or Criminal Code Act) and otherwise not committing a crime, they can't do anything about it.

 

I have been challenged by a few jobsworths over the years, particularly after 9/11, but when asked to say what law/rule I was actually breaking they simply backed down.

 

The only places in Australia it is specifically illegal to photograph without permission are defence installations.

I've had similar experiences, and done the same thing as David, with the same results. If the person challenging you is still persistent, tell them that you'll contact the police yourself, and get them to come and sort the matter out. Based on my own experience they'll lose interest in harassing you very quickly.
