EddieB
An affectionate and sometimes brutal portrayal of National Service, I have the "Virgin Soldiers" on DVD because of its railway content (nothing to do with "Juicy Lucy", no sir). The railway sequence was filmed just to the south of Bartlow (Cambridgeshire) on the then recently disused and partly lifted Saffron Walden branch. To create a Malayan jungle, rubber trees (in polythene bags!) were placed strategically around the set and the centrepiece was an LMS Black Five (with false tanks added to make it look more Malay), towed by rail and derailed (with smoke effects). Sadly the loco was cut up and not preserved - having been in service right up to the final act of steam on BR it should have been. RIP Leslie Thomas.
