Moving on from O scale in IKEA - APA box micro O, to maxi O

SMR CHRIS

Recommended Posts

Hi all would like to give this group a link to my new thread over in the Micro layout sig.

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/89204-australian-o-scale-in-ikea-apa-box/

I have started it as an experiment in O Scale could It fit in a IKEA APA box.

This little project is only 2 days old and progressing quickly possibly due to the small size?

3 tracks and a sector plate, inglenook style without points.

Australian theme NSWGR.

Take a look and any comments welcome.

For any 7mm thread lookers that haven't been over to the Micro & Box file threads an update.

Well I guess it is just about finished added the last bits of scenic's and the photo back scene.

Only need a good name the new photos may inspire.

I found the photographer figure at a local train show recently and "had to have" Dose he look like someone you know.???

The back Scene was a photo I took whilst on the road.

The left end still has the opening to make the APA box layout operational with a sector plate, but for the competition I have finished the back scene right round

APA Box will be on display at the

Aus7 Forum at North Sydney Leagues Club 12 Abbot street Cammeray Sydney NSW.

This Saturday Oct 25th 2014

now that does look very nice indeed.

Hi thirty2a thanks for the comment.

BTW I like your by line

Trains are for life not just Christmas !

So True if the play station/X box generation put as much effort in to a hobby, as they put into twiddling a control with their Thumbs, they would be much better equipped for the rest of there lives than just being able to sit, watch a screen and twiddle their thumbs and put on weight.

As this event is in North Sydney NSW, not Nova Scotia! I will just have to be impressed at a distance & see if a Canadian event inspired by this might transpire next year. Is it true IKEA have stopped selling APA boxes?

Reply part 1

Re event in Sydney yes a "O"long way for you to come I hope your event, a Canadian version of this gets up and running.

It's a a single day of O scale modelling with models on display talks on varied subjects relating to O scale and some of the local specialist traders and kit producers of our local railway equipment show their items and let modellers know what models are coming up.

Plus you also get to talk to like mined modellers etc. Good luck with your version.

Part 2

The APA Box demise? YES----NO

If what everyone has said is true ? "Yes" . but at the big IKEA in Sydney Australia they have plenty, when I got my one a few months ago it was just after everyone said they were discontinued I asked at IKEA Sydney and they said no is still a stock line but they do (IKEA) sometimes upgrade products and the original version disappears but when no one buys the replacement the old version comes back! So in Australia the APA, Is at present Alive and well and selling for $29.99 Australian.

Over on the micro/box file layout SIG there is a full thread about it started in August the person who started the thread is also working on a flat pack Box with Tim Horn's laser cut products to suit us model train people better than the APA but for me it would be to expensive to import to OZ as I guess same to Canada I could get a local supplier to make for the cost of item the postage duties not to mention the import of a wood product would have to have it irradiated for QT. Link to the layout project using the new layout flat pack box http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/91645-boxhorn-lane/

But the Box dose look like a quality product.

APA discontinued tread

Like Marty Hartlymartin on RMWeb http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/88300-my-o-scale-stuff/page-3

I was beaten in the model Diorama competition by two entries but I didn't enter to win but to just be part of the competition to foster the modelling of O scale and prove you can have a kitchen table top diorama as a working micro layout.

Marty and I got runner up after the winner decided to not claim his prize may have been partly due to the entry bending the rules slightly by making the minimum size by uses of a shadow base of the 300mm X 300mm minimum and the actual diorama only being 150mm X 150mm not much more than the building itself

But the effort put into the first winners building that was exceptional whilst Marty and I only slightly deviated from the ModelOKits building construction the two winners first then second went beyond a basic build and supplied detail level.

The kicker hear is that Marty and I were beaten by my wife Shelley who turned a NSWGR concrete signal box into a South Australian out back station building with random stone and the red outback dirt and their was no longer a railway running, Just the ruins of one making full use of the 600 X 600mm space with a dry creek bed and the local wildlife. Photos below.

There were only 4 entries but all were quality modelling and as said before it was just about being in it 50 people attended the Aus7 forum on the weekend but only 4 were willing to test their skills and put a model on display.

I was also a little disappointed in the number of models on display.

Again only 5 people putting Oscale models on display. Congrats to these modellers who put items on display to inspire others even part built models like a DJH Garret and the O aust models HCX passenger car sorry I forgot to take photos but will get some from the day and put in another post.

I will also get some photos of the other winning entry during the week as the owner lives only 100meters away it's great having a fellow modeller so close as we can help each other out and it's no chore to visit as don't even have to get the car out.post-14985-0-77203500-1414411325_thumb.jpg

Sounds like a good time. Shame I'm under 'house arrest', otherwise known as the HSC!

I'll have to pop over to Tempe soon then. The added bonus of the Ikea being there is Cooks River intermodal terminal being right next door-perfect for current scene inspiration, or just taking photos

I remember the dreaded HSC good luck with it not long to go and it will be all over.

We will be having another O scale forum next March, 21st --3--2015 so if you would like to come along the modelling ideas applies to all scales make a note for it would be great to have some more younger modellers this last forum was a good start on that with several people 40 and under including my self

Seriously thinking about holding an Aus7 Member's day some time later this year. Only trouble is that my place isn't air-conditioned, I think we're in for a hot summer.

Hi Marty was great to see you at the forum on the weekend I like your module and the new guards van was very nice thanks for bringing it along for display Yes we had already planed on doing something up here on the central coast also, so its a train ride from Sydney or hour car drive.

Stephen and I were thinking of doing a combined two layouts set up in his garage or may be a running session on my layout in the new year just have to get rid of an old Toyota Cressida out of the garage that was being worked on before I damaged my back and I will now never be able to put back together as it limits the space near the layout for operating.

The section of layout above may end up joining to the new layout under construction in photo below.

I would like to one day to have a large enough layout to one day run some full length trains.

If you're running the 72' Cars like the TAM you will need some serious mainline space.

A prototypical Mail Train used to consist usually of something like: MLV, BS, TAM, FS, EHO. usually some other independent carriage like the FR or FG or even a CX, BX or LFX would be found to increase capacity between the FS and the EHO.

Your right Martin,

They say size doesn't matter, but in "O scale" as you say to run a mail train, I will need some serious space.

Even a C38 and an L car set takes up 2.4meters of space and that's only 6 cars I can fit 5 cars in the car sidings at the moment, at a pinch 6 cars with un prototypical clearances on the siding leed's

But this may change, the "space" that is

Tomorrow We are going to look at a property that has a nice shed on it all 780 square meters of it and that's only the shed size.

Photos sent to me by the real-estate below do you think I could get the main line in ?

"The Shed"

Inside the Shed

post-14985-0-10895000-1414546980.jpg

Enclosing and lining the lower side of part of the shed you May just be able to get a main line along one wall with say balloon loops at each end and a branch line off one loop extending along the other wall, that way no duck under (have a fuzed spine) so can't do that to often. The mainline would still be a single line with passing loops and sidings at intermediate stations for operation reasons as that is the type of operation I like and it makes the operators actually run the layout like a railway.

post-14985-0-73562700-1414547022.jpg

According to the estate agent this part can closed off from the rest

Having helped operate both Stringybark Creek and Arakoola, I'll say that a double-track mainline makes things a bit more interesting.

Another idea you may want to consider is using a dog-bone style layout, where the visible part is double-track mainline, but where the down line loops back to become the up line. The return loops will take up quite a bit of space, but this doesn't appear to be at too much of a premium in that shed. I would strongly suggest lining and insulating the layout area, and perhaps even consider some form of air-conditioning, although, having whirly-bird vents in the roof space seems to do wonders at very low-cost (my old home in Wetherill Park had these, and made indoors very pleasant in summer.

I'm guesstimating that shed to be about 16m x 48m?

Not sure on the exact size yet the agent couldn't tell me only that it was 780 square meters inside that's 100 square meters larger than my current house block.

Will take a big tape measure and give you the details after tomorrow's visit

Re the layout ideas early days yet dreaming at the moment The double track main line takes away the operation style that I like. I would still set up so you could just let a train run from return loop to loop with DCC auto reverse loop modules won't be a problem.

I like the idea of sticking to NSWGR single line practice like the western line , Northern line or New England line to the boarder.

A bit of modellers licence required as I want bits of several lines and the branch line will end with Toronto as the station and yard would separate the scenes with view blocks to make defined scenic zones.

Any way may all be just a dream at the moment have looked at several property's before and been disappointed.

Re lining the shed, yes a must, false roof, wall between the rest of the shed and insulation in the walls and roof as the location gets extremes of the Ozzy climate hot in summer to snow in winter so a reverse cycle A/C is a must

Well looked at the property today the shed is just huge also has a section converted for weekend stays etc but turns out the current owner has had a dispute with council re the use of the shed and the zoning has been mucked up and needs to be sorted from industrial to rural to be able to build a house on and the current owner has ruffled to many feathers at the local council so could be a big problem getting the change made according to the current planners. As I said in a previous post we have been disappointed before and the agents won't disclose the information up front we would need to have the uses changed using an outside specialist but the council could still be the biggest problem.

On the plus side the views of the country side around the area are really nice and the house site that has been prepared takes full advantage of this and the shed was Huge Huge more than enough space for a layout and more than enough room for my cars as well.

Layout area would be approx 30x6.5 meters.

If we could workout the rezoning of the land to the correct usage for the area all would be good but I get the feeling the current owner has stood on the wrong toes at the local council.

On the trip I got to see some train related sights and a visit to the state mine museum at Lithgow. See the Flickr link below, photos should be uploading as I type this

Edit 3:20 am 31/10/14 sorry not all photos uploaded, the uploaded had frozen discovered every time the phone goes to sleep so dose the upload more now uploading have to keep prodding it to keep going! ,

Edit 3:38 am 31/10/14 now all uploaded the photos have up loaded in a bit of a random order?

Photos of Bathurst station and the plinthed loco 5112 a loco driven by an ex Australian primeinister Ben Chiffley in his time as a loco driver at Bathurst, some detail shots for modelling

Some diesels loco's seen along the way visit to state mine museum photos of loco's / items in yard TAM bogie for detail currently building an O scale TAM coach, also in the shed steam loco 2605 undergoing restoration. Then some items in a sad state at the ZigZag railway.

Thanks for sharing those

I like the Union message - Educate, Agitate, Organise - several in the UK only seem to concentrate on one of those . . . . . . .

As for the 'Shed', here in the UK the standard size is 6ft by 4ft - you could probably get hundreds of our sheds in one of yours.

Sorry to read about the planning issues - perhaps the local authority will look more favourably on a new owner - is it worth an informal chat with the council to see what their thoughts are now as your plans could be different to those previously submitted.

As a result of moving our 2 cats to Canada last week we now have 2 hefty cat boxes, 22*14*18". The obvious question.... What to do with them?

Our 40 foot container with all the modeling goods (& furniture) is somewhere near Halifax & expected next month, but I don't think we get to keep the big tin box!

I'm sure you will find a use for those boxes, if not the box, the timber they are made from !! There's a start of something any way.
