A photographer waits...

I saw someone walk across the tracks in front of a speeding CSX intermodal train a few days ago. Just ambled across without a care in the world.

No rush, no hurry, no "Oh crap that's a big bloody train!", nothing.

He had plenty of time to get across - so long as he hadn't tripped, of course! :(

There was a teenage girl killed on CP tracks near here last week. She was walking along the tracks, with 'earbud' headphones in. It's not the first time it's happened, I can remember at least two more cases. The tracks are fenced, they did that in builtup areas when Westcoast Express started running about 20 years ago. It doesn't stop people walking on them, though - I was on a Westcoast Express train which had to make a full emergency stop to avoid hitting a mother and two kids walking along the tracks to get to less-busy beach.

I think part of the problem in North America is that so few people travel by train here that they don't understand how long it takes a train to stop - buses and semis can stop pretty quickly, so a train should be able to - no?
