Will these smokebox door handles print in brass?

Recommended Posts

This smoke box door handle has successfully printed in FUD.  But will it print in raw brass?  Here is the Shapeways graphic that shows most of the handle is suspect.  The wheel is 2.7mm diameter.

Minimum wall for FUD is 0.3mm, and 0.6mm for brass, so you will be lucky if these things will cast. You may get  away with casting them if you 1/ thicken up the spokes of the wheels and the bottom flange and 2/ change the sprue so that the metal has a more or less straight path from the gate to each of your components. The usual way of doing this is to use a 'tree' with a central stem and branches off to each component, something like this:post-1730-0-17394500-1412643507_thumb.jpg

This is a much more complicated sprue, but it should give you a idea of what you  should be aiming for.

Also adding a feed from the bottom of the straight handle to the sprue will help that bit casts well.

Shapeways have (with quite rude messages) rejected every model I've tried for casting which has anything resembling a sprue - even when it wasn't a sprue but a needed part of the item!  Please keep us posted, I'll be interested to see how you get on.
