rodshaw
There are plenty of photos like the following, showing NS locos from the 70s and earlier: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=108636 But I've read that NS were formed in 1982 as a merger between Southern and Norfolk & Western. Can anyone enlighten me?
rodshaw
To partially answer my own question - a caption below the photo says the Southern bought a previous version of the NS.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted October 14, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 14, 2014 There was another smaller NS from 1942 to 82 and they decided to take the name for the new conglomerate, I guess to save arguments over keeping one or the other name of the biggest two parts and being an amalgam of both. Adrian Wintle
There are two Norfolk Southern railroads. The original Norfolk Southern Railroad was formed in the 1880s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_Southern_Railway_(1942%E2%80%9382) It ended up being bought by the Southern in 1974. The current Norfolk Southern is the result of the merger of the Norfolk and Western and the Southern in 1982. Adrian Edit - I can't get the link to work properly - it always seems to drop the last )
rodshaw
Thanks - somehow I'd missed that Wikipedia entry to the earlier NS.
