RMweb Premium Steve Purves Posted October 22, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 22, 2014 I am asking for help. In the background away from my box layouts, I am planning on building a large layout, the subject of which is no secret to anyone who knows me! Set in a very time specific era of 1992, this is when the highest rate of traffic flow from Melton Mowbray was taking place. The problem is, part of that traffic flow is not available. I am looking for a partner to assist me with producing these wagons and trailers via the 3d printing route (I do not even possess a computer, access to forums being by mobile only!). Once printed I am unsure one where to take it next, continue with the 3d print or to make a mould and resin cast. I do not expect exclusivity, once drawn, you can do what you want with it, what I am prepared to do is to ease the burden of any development costs/testing/building etc. The wagons in question are the Tiphook/Charterail KOA piggyback wagons, I have included links to some pictures. I would expect they ran loaded pretty much all the time, so would need to be modelled with the trailer in situ. There were two flows a day both originating from Melton Mowbray, one to Cricklewood via the Midland main line, and one to Trafford park via the west coast main line. The train was booked a class 47 but I have seen photos of both class 56 and class 60 hauling the train. Here is a photo of the Cricklewood train loading up to 13 wagons entirely of this type https://www.flickr.com/photos/64518788@N05/14517657096/ Here is a photo of the Trafford park train containing a mix of cargowaggons, 8 of these and then more cargowaggons https://www.flickr.com/photos/penmorfas/8080514731/ . Although the traffic was short lived (only 2 years) these could prove an interesting addition to any 1990’s layout. https://www.flickr.com/photos/richardajones/7048771037/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/6961426341/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/d1015/14242402753/ Transfers would also be required but this I will source once the project begins
Wild Boar Fell
An interesting wagon, would ATM's Cast Y25's be a close enough match for the bogies?
RMweb Premium Steve Purves Posted October 22, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 22, 2014 I would think they would certainly be suitable in this gauge.
simon br blue
Looks like an interesting wagon, have you got any scale drawings?

RMweb Premium Steve Purves Posted October 27, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 27, 2014 I am hopefully going to be working with a couple of people for this project, one is looking at the bogies, which are Y27 and not currently available. The other party is going to be looking at the wagon body and trailers. From the extra research, we have found that the wagons were re-used a couple of times after the passing of Charterail, once by Freighliner and once by DRS. See here for some pics - http://www.trucknetuk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=771989 There is probably going to be some milage is doing the wagon seperate to the trailer to enable the wagon to run both empty and with the milk tanker load in addition to the Charterail trailer that I require. A nice short modern train... https://www.flickr.com/photos/pinkwalkern/8281223704/ A few more wagons... https://www.flickr.com/photos/47118s-pixs/12730160953/ There is apparently a drawing on Page 160 of 'Intermodal Freight Transport' by David Lowe (0750659351) if anyone has access and could share a copy? Jim Martin
I had the Lowe book out of the library for so long that I could have bought a copy of my own with the accumulated fines! I'll have a look at my scans of the relevant pages (I didn't do the whole book, which covers loads of stuff other than rail, but if there was a wagon drawing, I'd have copied it) Jim
Jim Martin
Right, after a bit of a hunt-about, I've found my copy of the page from the Lowe book. Unfortunately it's a photo of the page, and taken none too square-on, so it won't be much good for anything other than getting a sense of the drawing. No dimensions, I'm afraid, and not really suitable for modelling: Looking at it, I've made a proper pig's ear of reducing it to an "RMWeb-friendly" size. Sorry about that. I don't think that you're missing anything very important, though. There isn't any wagon-specific text on that page that would be hugely informative if only I'd cropped the image, rather than just making it smaller. Jim <Edited to add comments on the woeful job of rendering the image suitable for RMWeb
