BR road vehicles c1990 pre-Railtrack

I joined S&T at Chislehurst in late '88 (then moved to Victoria not long afterwards), and the only BR-liveried vehicles we had were Morris Marina & Morris Ital vans. Everything else was hired in, and were mainly Toyota Lite Aces, but our 'mobile messroom' was a Talbot Express.

BR did have some right oddities, I remember seeing a light red chevanne with a rather large darker red double arrow on it. It was on a C plate which was very late for those

Love the replica Maestro 'russ p' makes a nice change from the few Bedford HA replicas about. May I just point out one small thing that struck me. All the vans I recall had British Rail on the back door but no red arrow.

My records show B R buying Maestro vans from B to F registrations and cars from A to E, after which the Astra reigned supreme for light vans.

Merfyn,

Did BR ever re-use the bodies on new chassis?

I believe it was the original intention but as far as I know it never happened. I have photos of an early one being refurbished and possibly on a new chassis but think it was a one off. Perhaps not cost effective.

Thanks Merf, the double arrow on the back door wasn't common as you say, but i do recall seeing a couple with them .one was how i have it and the other had BR on the opposite door at the arrows on the other. There was also some very late white ones which passed to railtrack .

I do intend to re register mine as an F plate but i need to get my 2.0efi restored so I can pass the plate over

I don't know how I missed it before starting this thread but I've just spotted:

...at 68 pages (!), it'll take me a while to work through it but it's absolutely fascinating stuff.

You could just sell it to me and start again... you know you want to...

Merf,is they leyland truck in your picture current or an old picture?

ORR365W from 1980 which we had at S&T in North Wales for about 10 years, I drove it for a couple of years after the original driver, Eric retired. Nice motor, used to do Crewe and Warrington to collect stores weekly and move materials to worksites. Picture taken on Sir Fon.

Oh that's a shame, I was hoping it was a preserved one.

Thornaby used to have one of those now and again when the 76 dodge was out of action

I don't want to sell it Pete, only got it finished in august.

If anyone needs graphics for a road vehicle or rail for that matter, graphic edge in sheringham did mine

The maestros are a definite bonus! I recon its about 88 as the loco has tdm cables but the road vehicles don't have the overhead warning flashes, also there is a mk1 facelift Sherpa present which would be W or X plate?

88 sounds good to me, the white top Sherpa would be about E or F reg. Those high top narrow Sherpas were mainly from a big batch of X reg.

Yeah, that is a great shot Russ. Thanks to everyone for the replies, it's given me a lot to think about. The only two 1/76 BR vehicles I have are an Oxford Commer (did BR actually use those?) and a Bedford TK crew bus in (S&T?) blue - neither of which are suitable for the period. I only need three or four vehicles for the layout but I now have a much better idea of what's suitable.

I'm slowly working my way through the Railway Motors thread on RMWeb which I'm finding fascinating... also, on Merf's Flickr pages, the Network SouthEast liveried Daimler DMS open-top bus is bringing back memories. I remember seeing it parked up in the yard at East Croydon every day - I wonder what happened to that?

Thanks again, Pete.

Actually, looking at that shot, isn't the tightly curved line in the background coming from the Southern Region (Kensington Olympia/North Pole Junction)? Willesden and Acton were about as far off the Southern as us Norwood drivers got, and it looks a little familiar!

As you say the Commer vans are too early for you, we had one at our depot but it went in 1978. Very few photos of them are around.

The Bedford TK S&T crew bus were around from about 1967 to 1980, green originally, then yellow. Forget the blue livery, that was a ficticous creation from guesswork on a black & white photo.

Here's an example of a BR hired Escort van I saw at Old Oak Common Open Day in 1991:

Perhaps a bit late for what you're looking for, but here's a Mainline branded Astravan photographed in 1996, possibly at Tinsley Open Day (if anyone can confirm that it would be useful):

Birmingham New St AMIs had a yellow Astra van till  it was replaced with a white S registered example. The white one was unmarked, but the yellow one had gained a Railtrack vinyl on the rear side panels by 1994.

In 1993, Stafford AMIs had a maroon Peugoet 309.

The above examples are a little after 1990 but there is a good chance ( with the exception of the white Astra) they may have been around in 1990
