paulprice
I need help........ In an effort to improve my LMS engine variety I have been thinking about what I can convert older compounds, black 5's, Jinties and 4F's into ?????
woodenhead
Liquid metal to weigh down more model equivalents. The old 4F wasn't a bad model and I think the compounds were also reasonable models, the Black 5 shows it age against the newer version. I rather liked the old Crab and 2-6-4, again both were later Farish models.
bridgiesimon
depending on where you are modelling, the 4F looks pretty similar to the Southern Q class - http://www.maunsell.org.uk/virtual%20shed/541/541_profile.htm Best wishes simon
paulprice
Im really looking for LMS locomotives I was thinking coal tanks, and similar
Black Sheep
I'm in the process of detailing my 4f in that I have chopped the coal out, filed the inside edges of the coal bunker to make them appear thinner and fitted a base to the tender and added real coal. Still need to fit transfers
paulprice
I did that to my 4f's it really improves them

Black Sheep
tender or loco drive? If loco drive, how about a mini garett of two 0-6-0 chassis?
paulprice
tender or loco drive? If loco drive, how about a mini garett of two 0-6-0 chassis? They are all loco drive trankfully
paulprice
I think I have had a good idea......???? If I lower the cylinders on a Crab chassis, will a farish body fit over the top??? and if so could this be re-worked into a representation of a Stanier Mogul? 34theletterbetweenB&D
You can probably make that work, but this is a model that Bach are likely to offer in N, since they are working on an OO version. Likewise the Coal Tank which has an OO model on the way. It's up to you, but I like to concentrate my DIY effort on models less likely to emerge RTR in the foreseeable future. Were there any non-MR pre-group design 0-6-0, 0-6-0T, 2-6-0, 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 types working in the LMS section you model? Mention of a Coal Tank makes me think LNWR, so is there scope for George V 4-4-0, PoW 4-6-0, Watford Tank, that sort of thing?
paulprice
The moment I start working on one, they will appear in the shops, the problem is with Bachman is the length of time these things tend to take before they appear. Even with my production timescales they are not as bad a the Ivatt 2-6-0 timescale from announcement to appearance in shops. I have a few plans for a few 4-6-0 and 0-6-0 loco's but as always too many ideas to little time...
34theletterbetweenB&D
It often seems that way; in OO as fast as I cobbled together loco drive A3, B17 and 9Fs, and a K3 and O1 out of RTR parts, way superior all new models were offered. I was just thinking about a 'K1' when Hornby announced it. Am I going to do an O4/7 or O4/8 for which I have the parts? Confining myself to 0-6-0 types for now, as we are never likely to see all of these; most recently pushed a J11 chassis into a J39 that had clapped out its old split chassis running gear, simply to get a working layout engine... paulprice
True, I have been thinking about converting some of my old Jinty loco's but the problem is into what far too many options. The only problem is if you use plastic trying to keep the weight up.
paulprice
I have had a brain wave, I have decided what the next locomotive to pass through the works will be..............I'm not telling yet though as I may change my mind
