DanielB
I forgot the photo of the freight cars, garage fences and greenery! D'oh! by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr
DanielB
This afternoon I've managed to decal one side each on a pair of freight cars, and have installed decoders in a pair of locos. As such, meet the latest additions to the fleet: by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr Later on, I plan on progressing the ground cover on the extension using DAS modelling clay, but photos of that will have to wait until it's cured and painted.
DanielB
This afternoon's progress isn't anything flashy, I managed to finish the decals on the Beercan tank car, cut the timber for and built the legs for the Handy Co extension, removed the scenery at the end of the linking spur on West Allen Street ready to fit the track to link it to Handy Co, and have gathered up all my supplies to do some projects tonight on my lunch break at work. As such, more to come later.

DanielB
Today's work so far has been pretty varied, with a roof added to the metals unloading shed, the crane painted and weathered (complete with bird poop!), some ladders painted ready to go on the fire escape on the factory building, some 7mm scale brick embossed styrene spray painted to represent HO scale cobblestones, the scrap bins for Singer Auto on Thawne painted, some more decal work done on the woodchip hopper and beercan tank car, and a few other little bits. Oh, and I've applied modelling clay to the hardstanding in the metals unloading spur, as well as to the ramp leading down to the coal yard. Hopefully some more odd jobs will get done tonight. by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr

DanielB
There wasn't a whole lot of progress yesterday due to a somewhat complicated freight car kit I built. Front Range Products 4-car articulated spine car with piggyback trailers. A fun little purchase I got from eBay yesterday alongside a SPSF gondola and a CNW boxcar. Group shot: by Dan Beresford, on Flickr And the progress on the spine car set - still needs details adding to the coupler end of the B car, and a truck adding to one of the C cars. I used Deluxe Materials liquid weight inside the two halves of each spine car to give the model some heft, and will apply more to the underside of the wheel platforms if needed. I also plan to replace the wheels with metal ones for added weight. Should see it become quite sturdy. by Dan Beresford[, on Flickr Edited February 12, 2017 by DanielB
DanielB
Tonight I've been working on a few detail parts, as well as giving the cobblestone embossed styrene a wash of white paint. Firstly, I built 5 refuge areas to add to the coal trestle: by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr I also built a workbench, a barrel rack, and a freight cradle: by Dan Beresford, on Flickr by Dan Beresford, on Flickr Lastly, a wooden cradle for a gondola load, which I'll use for both steel coils and stone slabs - depending on which industry the gondola is dedicated to. by Dan Beresford, on Flickr
DanielB
Final update for the night, before I head to bed. One more night shift tonight, and then I'm off for 4 days, so should see a fair bit of progress. I hope! First of all, I think the L&N need to sack their cleaning crews, as they've done a piss-poor job on these boxcars. Next, the coal trestle is finally finished. Just needs planting and coal/sand adding to the bins. Really proud of this one. Some of those refuge platforms look awfully unsafe!

DanielB
Before work this afternoon I made the effort to stick down the base layer of cobblestones in the coal yard. They are made from a sheet of Slater's O scale brick embossed styrene, spray painted with Plasticote brown paint from a rattle can, then washed with Vallejo ModelAir White Grey paint. Lots more to do here but I'm looking forward to doing it.
DanielB
Another quick update for today - Midland Belt Railroad woodchip hopper. Built from a Bowser kit with Microscale decals stenciled lettering applied for the railroad name and reporting marks, it was weathered with Plasticote brown paint from a rattle can, as well as Vallejo ModelAir US Desert Sand and Railmatch Oily Steel paints. Now to finish it off I just need some sawdust to apply to the molded plastic car load to better simulate wood chips. DanielB
Not much further progress beyond the woodchip hopper this morning, though there is the small matter of these...
DanielB
I was just going through videos on YouTube of last year's Wakefield show, and lo and behold I find footage of a familiar layout... :lolol: https://youtu.be/rFXmxM4T_MM?t=2m13s Thanks to the chap who filmed it, because of his effort I now have actual concrete evidence that the layout DOES work!

DanielB
Well, after spending most of the day clearing out my layout room, I've now got WA&T set up and ready to go. I think that the new extension adds a lot of interest and operating potential, and I can't wait until I've gotten the whole thing ready for a session to test it all out. It really is coming together now!
JAMO
That's a nice layout! I understand you want to test the operations.
DanielB
Progress for today - a PS-1 boxcar converted over into a woodchip hopper - most famously done by the Bangor and Aroostock, though the Central of Georgia had a fair few, so I'm going to do this one up in Midland Belt colours as one of a few they purchased from the Southern. I'll be adding more as and when I can, as any excuse to make use of 40' cars is welcome due to the short length of the fiddle yard. Unfortunately with the way the layout fits in my layout room, the fiddle yard cannot be extended any further as there is a wall in the way. This shouldn't be too much of a problem soon though, as the next extensions I have planned include a yard. Enough yapping from me, here's the hopper before paint: In addition, I set up some cars on the layout ready to start an operating session once the wiring to link Handy Co and West Allen Street together is complete. Couldn't help but take some pictures though. Alco RS2 #2127 backs onto the trestle at Noel's Fuel and Merchantile with a couple of coal hoppers... ...whilst the crew at Handy Co are busy getting a flatbed truck lined up ready for an inbound shipment. Sybil at the Trackside Cafe has taken delivery of a couple of new vending machines and is waiting for her bus boy to finish his break and stock them with the latest delivery of soda pop. Vilas Brothers have just taken delivery of a tank car full of chemicals ready to make paint thinners. Not sure what they need the gondola for yet though! Finally, SD35 #3088 idles on the refuelling spur awaiting a crew change.
DanielB
I spent last night doing as many little jobs on the layout as I could - the two I have worth showing are the coal yard, and a freight car load I made from scraps. The coal pens contain 2 different grades of coal, as well as sand. The overgrown pen at the end holds gravel, but judging by the greenery growing over it, they haven't sold any in a while! The car load is made from offcuts of basswood strip and a broken old cog from an Airsoft rifle. I'm hoping to pick up a heavyweight flat car or two at some point, and this will be going on one of them. For now, my Western Maryland flat car is seeing some use instead.
DanielB
Progress for this "weekend", I've cleared out my layout room, done some woodworking, some electrics, some structure and rolling stock projects, and a lot of scenery work. I also did a lot of planning on the next stages of the layout after Handy Co is finished. Oh, I also ripped my finger open on some code 83 rail, which really bloody hurt! You'll be able to see the mess it made on the side of my freemo module. Either way, I'll heal. Photos! Beyond this, I also realised that I've not actually taken photos of MBRR 437 after I'd patched and detailed it. I need to find a seated HO scale figure smoking a cigarette suitable to use as one of the other crew on the locomotive, to go on the chair.
