Metropolitan
I thought I might start this one with a competition! I've got two old RTR Halls: Both are a bit grim but can anyone identify the two manufacturers of the models? Not easy. A round of applause to the winner!! Great stuff as usual from DJH. The Ford Escort of kitmakers and all the better for it! Costs for anyone who cares: Kit- ??120 DJH Motor/Gearbox -??40 Markits (superb) wheelset - ??60 Fox's transfers and plates -??18 I guess you could get the cost down to ??150 if you were to use Gibson wheels, a cheaper motor and painted it plain black or lined it yourself. At which price kit loco's are beginning to compete with RTR's in terms of cost!! EDIT: For some reason, a pound sign appears as ?? on this forum? RMweb Gold Taz Posted February 14, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2010 John, at a guess I'd say the first one is a Replica (continued by Bachmann) modified Hall and the rear one is the old Hornby offering? Looking forward to the kit build. I assume it will be at your usual pace and finished by the end of tomorrow
craigwelsh
John, at a guess I'd say the first one is a Replica (continued by Bachmann) modified Hall and the rear one is the old Hornby offering? That first one would be the model later sold by Bachmann but its a Modified Hall (Hawksworth) and not an original hall, the frames coming through in front of the smokebox giving it away and it would have a plate bogie too. Bachmann have recently done the normal Hall and its a very good model plus mine are superb runners, only ??45 too . No idea if the DJH kit allows both options to be built. S.A.C Martin
Replica is I think the first one and, specifically, Triang/Hornby is the second as I think it must be the model of Albert Hall?
Metropolitan
Spot on. You folks are amazing! The first one is a Replica and the second an old Hornby. The boilers are so different between the two it's hard to believe they are meant to be the same engine.
Horsetan
The DJH kit has a few compromises in some of the dimensions - there was an article in MRJ years ago which highlighted what they are.... I'll see if I can unearth it. ....DJH. The Ford Escort of kitmakers.... Aha, but which Mark? I, II, III or IV?
Metropolitan
Easy to build. Recommended bar caveat below: There is an absolute Howler of a fault with the etchings for the cab footplate valances. The error is acknowledged in the instructions but they struggle to make clear what it is and how to correct it!! So beware! It's not as if it's a new kit so why it hasn't been corrected after all this time I know not. I've got plates for Northcliffe Hall. I think this was a wartime built loco so I assume it was turned out unlined with shirtbutton emblem on the tender?
Miss Prism
There are serious dimensional problems with the smokebox and the front framing. I think DJH used the Modified Hall drawing for those bits! Doh....

Metropolitan
It's done: And now for something completely different. Back to the Met to complete my layout of Rickmansworth as the track work arrived today. I may be some considerable time!.............
