Shadow
Not sure if you scanner can save in a different format, but try scanning at a higher DPI, and saving as a .png file. PNG files are lossless when stored, it looks like the image compression has lost a lot of the detail in the dark area at the bottom. Dave
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted April 28, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2015 Ben, I've had a "play" with the image and didn't get very far as the bottom part of the photo has lost a lot of detail and looks "blocky" when I lighten it. Could you scan it so the vertical dimension is between 1500 and 2000 pixels (at present it is only 799 pixels high)? Then you need to save it at a higher quality, at the moment the file I can download is only about 31KB which means the detail has been lost in the compression that has been applied when it has been saved. If you could save it and then upload it at around 500KB it might be possible to do something with it. David
ben pez
Many thanks for all your help and replies lads Im not that clued up with computers though to scan it and make it bigger, different format/File etc. Thanks for your help anyway lads Cheers Ben
raymw
Hi Ben, If you intend scanning images, it would pay you to get a bit clued up on the process. The detail is there in the original slide, but because you have saved it as a highly compressed jpeg image, the information has been lost. The blocking is caused by jpeg compression (it takes colours near to each other and makes them the same, and other stuff), as David mentioned. Adjusting the gamma, converting to black and white, basic editing can be easily/quickly carried out in free software, if you could be bothered. It would take about 5 seconds per image, just a couple of clicks and move a slider.

Shadow
Ben, What slide scanner are you using? Someone may be able to help with settings, etc. If you do try again, just trying to save in a different format to JPEG will help. Try to save in BMP (Bitmap) or PNG as these give less loss to the image. but getting back to what we can see so far, I'm guessing something like this, Black 5 https://hattonsimages.blob.core.windows.net/products/372-136_26258_Qty1_2.jpg https://www.flickr.com/photos/remedy451/10804871916 Dave
