End of side one - please turn over...

As is kind of hinted at by the title, I'm pretty happy that I've finished the first side of the 09. It's just been a matter of adding the the little details with gouache and powders, so again it won't look much different to last time.

The masking tape depot plaque seems to have worked as intended, a bit more gouache washes and powders in this area have made it look as it should.

The trickiest part of this phase was the marks on the battery box where the BR arrow had been removed. Again using goucahe helped with this, as I found it really difficult to get to look convincing. I think this is attempt number 4 - the rest were wiped off with a damp cotton bud as I wasn't happy with them.

I've made a start on the front, but that needs a lot more work yet. The cab end and other side need to be done next. I'm really pleased with the way this one is turning out - I think it might be the best one yet!

You've got a tremendous eye for detail Martin. It may be attempt number 4 for the arrows but they certainly look convincing now. :)

It looks extremely good - definitely one of those cases where you have to look to check its not the real thing.

I know what you mean about those jobs that seem to soak up work with little apparent result

It possibly does feel like much work for little apparent change - but looking down through the shots showing the weathering's development one can see what has changed step at a time. You also achieve a certain tangible depth to the weathering which can only take time to build up.

Thanks for the kind words everyone B)

James - Yup, I bet you are the only one to study the cab roof closely

Wayne - Not sure what the next project will be yet, I'll be starting on a 455 soon, so it may well be that. I've plans for 58019 in suitably grotty condition as well at some point.

Hi Martin

Just a quick re-intro, we had a brief PM conversation over the summer when Chittle was up for sale. Do you know if it has be re-launched on RMWeb yet or if it has been re-named? I would like to see it again.

I am now following your new Blog with great interest and just love the 09 weathering. You seem to get the sense of age and wear and tear just right. Good close up photos too.

Any progress on the layout to put them on yet?

Regards Paul

Hi Paul,

I'm not sure what has happened to it TBH - it was bought by a member, so hope it should appear back again at some point.

No real progress on the layout as yet - I've done the baseboard fettling I needed to do. Once the 09 is complete, which may not be too much longer, it'll be back to the pointwork again. Once I've finished all the points, I'll start tracklaying.
