Alresford - 2mm finescale 25 years ago

I stumbled across some scanned photos in one of the dusty corners of my hard drive, and thought I would share them. They are of the 2mm finescale layout 'Alresford', built by members of the Basingstoke and North Hants Model Railway Society in the late 1980's. Dave Harris, Clive White, the late John Moffat, and myself were the main driving force behind the production of the layout, although there were others, whose names I have sadly forgotten, that provided some input.

It visited quite a few exhibitions in the first half of the 1990's, and appeared in the Railway Modeller magazine (with better quality photos than these).

The 2H was the old MTK kit, which I believe became the BH Enterprises kit later on. It comprised a plastic shell, with brass overlaid sides and white-metal ends. It was powered by the old Farish DMU motor bogie, with extra pickup from a split frame bogie at the other end of the power car. I still have it, but the motor bogie is completely worn out now. It never had interior detail or door handles, so it was far from finescale, but it worked, which was the main thing in the early days of the layout when all we had the 2H, Dave Harris' scratch built M7 and a Farish Class 33 with the wheels turned down

Lovely set of photos Ian. I remember seeing this one in Railway Modeller and have got the copy of it somewhere at home. Fantastic layout!

Best regards,

Jeremy

Thanks for posting these Ian. Like Jeremy I remember seeing this in RM and thinking it was a brilliant layout. Does it still exist?

When we retired the layout from the exhibition circuit, we had hoped it would go to the Mid-Hants Railway as a static display, but various circumstances ended up with it being disposed of through eBay. It seems it is still in existence, but untouched, according to a comment on Youtube:
