  1. . Bah ! Humbug ! . D9518 a local legend; the last one to be used in BR revenue service Saturday 19th. April, 1969, just over the hill from here at Radyr. . A Hippo knows how to tug at the heart strings.
  2. The end of the 'nine-fivers' The demise of the "nine-fivers" has always been skipped over by authors of books and articles. I will attempt to address this. . D9518 was under repair at Cardiff Canton on 1st. March, 1969 before despatch to pilot duties at Radyr Yard. . D9518 returned to Canton for an exam, on 17th. March, 1969 before returning to traffic on 1st. April, 1969. . She was apparently back at Canton on 6th. April, 1969 for attention to her turbo-charger and a broken spring. . Commencing Monday, 14th. April, 1969, D9518 was rostered to work the following daily 'trip' workings from Radyr Yard 06:15 to Roath Branch Jcn. 09:35 to Roath Branch Jcn. 14:20 to Maindy . When these duties were finished on Saturday, 19th. April, thus ended the last known rostered revenue earning service of a Class 14 on British Rail. From Monday, 21st. April, 1969 the above 'trips' were taken over by a Class 08. . "The last one" D9518 at Radyr Yard 5th. March, 1969 - photographer unknown. "The last one" D9518 in the same spot, three days later, Radyr Yard 8th. March, 1969 - photographer unknown. . On Saturday, 26th. April, 1969 the following Cardiff, Canton allox Cl.14s were officially withdrawn D9500, D9502, D9514, D9518, D9527 ( previously withdrawn No's D9509, D9519, D9526, D9530 & D9535 were also stored at Canton at this date) Canton's previously withdrawn D9517 was stored at Newport, Ebbw Jcn. depot and was still there until at least Sunday, 24th. July, 1969. On the same day, 26th April, the following Cl.14s, which had had no rostered diagrams since at least 12th. April, 1969 were officially withdrawn D9521, D9524, D9536, D9538, D9555 at Swansea, Landore, and were still at there the following November q.v.. . The final operational example, D9518 was initially stored at Radyr Yard, and reportedly removed to Cardiff Canton for more secure storage on Saturday, 24th. May, 1969 but other information suggests the loco was already at Canton by Sunday, 11th. May, 1969. . On 30th. June, 1969, D9502,D9514, D9518,D9527 departed Canton for Gloucester, Horton Road depot hauled by D6607. They had been sold to the NCB, On 4th. July, 1969 all four were still stabled Gloucester Horton Rd, but arrived in the North East (NCB Ashington) on 19th. July (altho' some reports suggest 6th August). . However, this was not the end of the story..... . During September, 1969, despite being 'officially withdrawn' Canton's D9500 & D9517 were brought back to life with D9517 in use as the 'shed pilot on 18th. September, and both were subsequently employed on local PW workings and 'trips' from Penarth Curve North (a small yard, adjacent to the Canton DMU depot). This was obviously to keep them in working order, as by Saturday 22nd November, both D9500 & D9517 were noted lying over at York depot whilst en-route to a new life with the NCB, also at Ashington. . By Sunday, 23rd. November, 1969 there had been a 'move around' with D9521 & D9555 stored at Landore depot, D9524, D9526 & D9538 now stored at Landore goods depot . By the following Saturday, 29th November, 1969 D9521, D9526, D9555 had moved from Swansea to Cardiff Canton, joining D9509 & D9519. Whilst D9524, D9530, D9536 (apparently moved from Canton) , D9538 were at Swansea on the same date . The last of the class I saw 'operating' was D9555, ticking over beneath Canton depot's footbridge whilst shunting Canton Brickyard & Mileage sidings one cold evening during the first week of December, 1969, it was again in use as depot pilot on 19th. December, 1969.. . But..... on 8th. March, 1970, D9538 was in use as the Canton 'shed pilot' - again, in advance of its' sale the following month to Shell-Mex. Although it was later re-sold to BSC Ebbw Vale. . This was still not the end of the story with D9524 (some reports state D9540 instead of D9540, but this was sold from Daireycoates in Nov.1968) & D9535 resurrected from store at Canton, during March 1970 and brought back to life for use during May, 1970on an extensive PW relaying job on the North & West route, and during which they regularly stabled in the bay at Hereford. . On completion, both returned to Canton with D9524 being sold during July, 1970 for use at BP Grangemouth, and D9535 being sold the same month to the NCB for use at Burradon. . However, this was not the end of the story, as far as "nine-fivers" on the mainline in South Wales are concerned....... . D9530 was initially sold to Gulf Oil and used at their Waterston refinery in West Wales; from where it was re-sold to the NCB for use at Mardy Colliery, Maerdy, at the head ofthe Rhondda Fach. It would appear the sale was 'arranged' through Messrs A.R.Adams of Newport, and D9530 received attention at Swindon Works prior to delivery to Maerdy. D9530 awaits attention outside Canton depot, circa 1976/1977. Peter Jordan photograph. Whilst at Maerdy, D9530 was a regular visitor to Cardiff, Canton for attention, and on one occasion circa 1976/1977, Canton were too busy to carry out the repairs and D9530 was towed to Ebbw Jcn. depot for the necessary repairs. Repairs complete, staff at Ebbw Jcn. were of the impression a 'test run' was required, and one night shift driver was qualified on "nine-fivers"................and so, in the dead of night, almost eight years after the class were officially withdrawn from BR service, D9530 ran (unofficially) from Ebbw Jcn. depot to Rogerstone and back, before returning to Mardy Colliery, Mardy where she was eventually scraped in the early 1980s. Brian R
  3. . My notes suggest that there had been more D95xx locos at Horton Road prior to 6th. July, 1969. . D6607 left Canton on 30th. June, 1969 with D9502, 9514, 9518 and 9527 in tow, the four having been sold to the NCB North East Area. . The four 'nine-fivers' were at Horton Road on 3rd. and 4th. July, 1969, but D9502 & D9527 had departed by Sunday 6th. (D9527 at least was later dumped at Washwood Heath for almost a fortnight) ....but later that month all four were reunited and passed through Derby, heading north behind D102. . PS D9518 was the last of the class to work in BR revenue service, finishing its working life at Radyr, on Saturday 20th. April, 1969 .......six days after the date set by management for the cessation of the class' duties in South Wales.
  4. I was looking at Pantmawr North and felt perhaps it would lighten the mood if a couple of trains were to be parked up. Here we have 7444 on a short cement train waiting in PN's No 1Siding, whilst D9518, having run around it's train, is now propelling an open wagon with an unidentified part for the Pithead gear into the Colliery sidings. Quite a bit still to do, including an awful lot of weathering to locos and stock.
  5. More bridge building takes place today. D9518 on clearance trials. The second set of railings for the North end occupational bridge have been put together. 1
  6. On this day in history; Saturday, 19th. April, 1969 Canton allocated D9518 worked the following Radyr trips from Monday 14/04/1969 – Saturday 19/04/1969. 06:15 Roath Branch 09:35 Roath Branch 14:20 Maindy When D9518 returned to Radyr on the Saturday, it had completed what was the last recorded revenue working of a Cl.14 loco on British Rail. Commencing Monday, 21st April 1969 this would become a Cl.08 duty
  7. As Radyr is, and has always been my local yard, it occupies a special place in my love of railways. Radyr was so busy during the late 1960s that coal trains would queue, nose to tail between Radyr Junction ( Radyr Station ) and Walnut Tree Junction ( Taffs Well ) due to the lack of capacity within the yard, it was literally a case of "one out, one in". . Hence, the reorganisation of freight working in South Wales that took place in stages during the late 1960s, with the emphasis on block workings and minimal marshalling wherever possible, and certain yards only taking certain traffic. This resulted in what was known as 'Blocplan' The second stage of Cardiff Valleys ‘Blockplan’ was introduced from Monday, 14th. April, 1969, involving Cl.37 – 28 locomotives, stabled weekends at Canton; 3 Radyr; 16 Aberdare; 4 Llantrisant; 2 (1x shunts Bridgend, Bridgend West & Coity at nights) Barry; 2 (dual ? air braked) Severn Tunnel Jnc; 1 Cl.08 Aberdare; 1 (shunts Abercwmboi - days, Aberdare – nights) Radyr; 5 (i) Radyr Quarry Jnc. Pilot (ii) Radyr Top End Pilot (iii) Cathays C&W pilot – morning, Radyr pilot – afternoon (iv) Pontypridd & Treforest pilot. Llantrisant; 1 Barry; 5 (radio fitted for docks work) Cl.47 Barry; 2 (air brake fitted) This resulted in the following locos being stabled at Radyr the following Sunday, 20th. April, 1969 3595, 3604, 3759, 4125, 6600,6875-boiler fitted, off early morning news/parcels train, 6886, 6906, 6908, 6938, 6957, 6971-off PW train, 6972, 6974, 6988-off PW train, 6990, 6991, 6992, 6994, 9518 NB The previous week, D9518 had worked the following Radyr trips; 06:15 Roath Branch 09:35 Roath Branch 14:20 Maindy and when this diagram was completed on Saturday, 19th. April, 1969, this was the last recorded revenue working of a Cl.14 loco on British Rail. Commencing Monday, 21st April 1969 this would become a Cl.08 duty ............................................ Coal trains from Radyr, using the North & West route during 1971/1972 included; There would no doubt be others; at least one from the Western Valleys, and no doubt others from Margam / Jersey Marine. The Cl.37s (and other locos) stabled at Godfrey Road adjacent to Newport High Street, were those which would have been stabled at Ebbw Junction depot, had it not closed. . If there's more you think I may be able to assist with, please let me know. . Brian R
  8. Another installment in the riveting (and welding) story of Rocks by Rail, The Rutland Railway Museum 14 – THE WOOLSTHORPE IRONSTONE QUARRY LOCO SHED OPENING AND AN INFLUX OF DIESELS FROM THE NORTH-EAST After nearly two years of effort the re-built Woolsthorpe Ironstone Quarry Loco Shed was opened to the public during an Open Day in mid-summer 1987. Our guest of honour was Rt Hon Earl of Gainsborough who lived at Exton and on whose land the United Steel Companies Ore Mining Branch worked ironstone from 1950 to 1973. Reflecting the original wide-ranging museum collection policy relating to the preservation of industrial locomotives from various industrial users 1987 saw a number of diesel locomotive exhibit arrivals from National Coal Board sites mainly in the north – east of the country. These were all privately owned by museum members - with the exception of the small Hunslet diesel locomotive which was then on loan to the museum . 1 General view of the re-opening of the re-built Woolsthorpe Shed held on a public open day. Steam loco Singapore did the honours to re-open the shed by breaking a tape as it emerged whistling from the building as part of a short ceremony. 2. Photo of Hunslet built diesel NORWOOD COKING PLANT No.1 seen just prior to delivery to the museum. 3 .In 1987 the former BR D95XX (Class 14) diesel locomotives that formerly worked on the extensive NCB Ashington colliery railways near Newcastle upon Tyne were withdrawn as the coal industry declined. Privately owned D9555 is seen on arrival at the museum still bearing its NCB blue livery and identification. D9555 was the last standard gauge diesel locomotive to be built at BR Swindon Works in 1965. 4. Cabside lettering on D9555 5. D9555 was shortly joined by sister locomotive NCB No.7 (D9518). A month later NCB No. 3 (D9521) also arrived at the museum bringing the total of class 14 locos then resident at the museum to four. Three quarters of the class 14 fleet led by D9555 at the museum. 10. I think you may have misread my post ?. . I have not claimed this photo was taken at York. . I wrote:- "....4th. July, 1969 Still stabled Gloucester Horton Rd, Subsequently photographed passing Derby Midland (see attached, photographer unknown)...." I am aware the photo was taken at Derby, But do not know what date it was taken. However, I do know that the train in the photo is made up of D9502, D9514,D9518 & D9527, as you can clearly see the first loco to be D9502. . The locos sighted at York on 22nd November, 1969 were different to those seen passing Derby, and were D9500 & D9517. . I hope this clears up your confusion ? . Brian R

  13. Re:- D9502 passing Derby behind a Peak. . On 30/06/1969 D6607 left Canton hauling D9502, D9514, D9518 & D9527 to Gloucester. . The four 'nine fivers' were snapped on Horton Road depot by several enthusiasts (one shot http://www.rail-online.co.uk/p86759201/he93ba79#he93ba79. is dated 04/07/1969) . All four locos had been purchased by the NCB North East Region and were en-route to the Ashington complex. . Brian R
  14. D9518 at Cardiff General was taken post 1966 when the GWR style signalling was replaced. . But you're correct, so much " steam age " paraphenalia, and a setting that has changed beyond recognition. . This, for me was where I spent every Saturday, the 'up' end of 3&4 in spring/summer, or the waiting room in winter. . It's hard to believe how busy the place was then, and the diversity of locos, rolling stock and traffic that passed us by, and now passed into oblivion. . Jonny777's predicament is a reversal of ours, we rarely travelled from cardiff to Bristol, except for Bath Road Open days, and in later years to bunk St.Phillips Marsh for the stored hydraulics and look out for the 'newly arrived' 25s, 31s and a bit later 50s. . By the time I snapped D1013 arriving on a Taunton/Bristol-Cardiff on 24th. April, 1973 the writing was on the wall. Brian R
  15. D9518 at Cardiff General - I'd put money (but only a little) on it working from Newtown/Long Dyke to Llantrisant due to the (a) gunpowder vans, probably destined for the ICI stores at Brofiscin ( B) the hoppers returning from the 'Dowlais' aka East Moors for either Llanharry or Creigiau © and the tank wagon, possibly for by-products from either Cwm or Coed Ely coke ovens. . Very, very nice. Brian R
  16. D9518 at Cardiff - that is a cracking shot, possibly best lit D95xx shot ever seen! Many thanks for sharing them all Phil
  17. Now the Heljan effort has arrived, there's no doubt that the magazines will trot out the usual "all withdrawn April/May 1969 and either scrapped or sold" . During the demise of the "nine-fivers" (no one in South Wales called them enything else in those days) I made some notes from my, and my friend's sightings. . At the time I was a pupil at Cantonian High School, Cardiff adjacent to the Ninian Park - Radyr (then) freight line, and despite the locos having been officially withdrawn, those stored at Canton were in almost daily use throughout 1969, passing my school just after 11.00am Mon-Fri on the Long Dyke/Newtown - Radyr trip. When one was unavailable the rostered Cl.08 would be pressed into use. The train would often load to 50slu. . These are my sightings............. . B.R.
