Pobrien
Why did the enthusiasts prefer Leander to Barfleur? It was only really possible to do this at the weekend as the shed was too busy on a weekday. It may have been that Barfleur was receiving attention in the shed during the week before being moved outside to await towing to Swindon. She was also in better external condition to Leander, but I would have liked to have given her a similar send off. I visited Risca Scrapyard in April 1965, but there were no engines there and she had been cut up. I recently came across a photo of the scrapyard with a line of GWR types waiting to be scrapped in 1964 with a LMS loco at the end of the line - it may well have been Barfleur. It was a great pity that being withdrawn within three days of each other, they both did not go to Barry, where it would eventually have been saved. johnw1
On this Day in History – Derby Works – 9th April 1973. Forty One years ago I had a tour round the now closed and demolished Derby Locomotive Works which produced the following: class 03 (2381/87), class 08 (3009/34/92/94/98, 3100/07, 3587, 3695, 3765/79, 3856, 3909/12/36/88, 4000, 4149), class 17 (8598), class 20 (8016/29/40/59, 8123/35/36, 8308), class 24 (5025/49/55/57/85), class 25 (5160, 5201/22/84/89, 7539/42/43/50/70/95, 7625/54), class 27 (5349/91), class 40 (242), class 44 (3), class 45 (19/43/59/67/72/86, 106, 45101/03), class 46 (160/71/83). Steam: 4472 Flying Scotsman, 45690 Leander, 47357. Locomotives of note were ex Southern Region class 08’s 3092/94/98 and 3100 which were withdrawn and were about to undergo an overhaul having been sold for export to a Liberian company, LAMCo. Class 08, 3034 withdrawn from Tinsley in November 1972 and used for spares for the LAMCo class 08’s, broken up at Derby in November 1973. Class 24, 5049 which had been involved in an accident at Kidsgrove when the No2 end cab was crushed back to the bulkhead with the bulkhead bent backwards into the boiler compartment. The repair resulted in 5049 gaining a new cab with the later style roof mounted headcode box. Also of note is the commencement of the class 45 electric train heating equipment fitment with 45101, 45103, 45104 (59), 45105 (86), 45106 (106) and 45107 (43) all present. Where was 45102? Finally there were three steam locomotives under repair, 4472 Flying Scotsman which had run under its own power from Edge Hill after returning from spending four years in America, Stanier Jubilee 45690 Leander being repaired and repainted prior to moving to the Dinting Railway Centre and Fowler Jinty tank 47357 destined for the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley. A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. johnw1
On this Day in History - Lenton South Junction, Trowell Junction and Toton – Saturday, 19th July 1969 It is mid summer forty five years ago it was out and about on the push bike for the day. Lenton South Junction Class 20 (8037, 8158), class 25 (7523) Trowell Junction Class 20 (8007/47, 8137/47/59/73/97), class 31 (5813), class 37 (6811), class 45 (63/93, 118), class 46 (163), class 47 (1806/23/27/77) Toton Class 08 (3026/29, 3404), class 20 (8006/61/63/64, 8114/38/41/43/47/48/50/52/62/76/79/88/89), class 25 (5227/32/42/44, 7500/12/16/29/87, 7602/05/18), class 27 (5375), class 31 (5805), class 44 (2/6/10), class 45 (11/17/37/62/68/76/80/91/97, 108/26), class 47 (1519/46, 1694, 1729/41/59, 1824/29) Of note are 1519, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML, the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed three years later just “down the road” at Lenton South Junction and class 27 5375 which is a reminder that during the 1960’s half the class 27 fleet were Midland Main Line engines. Also at this time Toton was receiving class 20’s transferred from the London area and from Scotland and on this day I saw for the first time 8006/07 ex London and 8114 ex Scotland. johnw1
On this day in History - Lincolnshire – 27th July 1969 A visit to a couple of Lincolnshire Motive Power Depots forty five years ago. Lincoln (40A) Class 03 (2024/26), class 08 (3347, 3533), class 10 (3613/14/18/19, 4061/75), class 25 (7502), class 37 (6809/15). Lincoln Central Class 31 (5555), class 37 (6707, 6802). Immingham (40B) Class 03 (2025), class 08 (3195, 3427, 3506/07/49), class 10 (4050/51), class 11 (12118/25/35), class 20 (8050/58), class 31 (5550/51/71/73/83, 5690, 5801), class 47 (1512/38/49/59/61/65/76, 1660, 1786/87, 1833/62/64/68/70/98). Cleethorpes Class 37 (6753/54) Of note is the diversity of 350hp diesel shunters found at Immingham with examples of class 08, 10 and 11 being present, although the days were numbered for the class 10 and 11 locomotives. Locomotives of note were 12125 and 12135 which had been withdrawn the previous month in June 1969 and would be broken up within a few weeks of this visit during September 1969. 3613/14/19 had all been withdrawn in February 1969 and 3618 had been withdrawn in April 1969, all bar 3614 were sold to the National Coal Board for use at Moor Green colliery, the unfortunate 3614 being broken up within days of this visit during August 1969. johnw1
On this Day in History - Cardiff – 6th August 1970 The family holiday in 1970 was to Barry Island, South Wales The family holiday was the one time in the year that I would have a day out on the railways with my Dad in tow. He was not the slightest bit interested in railways but always felt that this was the time to take a more direct interest in my hobby and spend a day with his son. The year before it was a day on the Ffestiniog Railway and this year I had already dragged him round the graveyard of steam before we set out for an afternoon at Cardiff and this is what we saw that day. Barry – Cardiff Class 08 (3759, 4012), class 35 (7095), class 37 (6881), class 45 (127) Cardiff Canton MPD (86A) Class 08 (3256/68, 3429, 3749, 3807/16/17/18, 4011), class 14 (9509/19/35), class 35 (7055/56/57/69/76/81/83/87/88/94), class 37 (6606, 6875, 6976/81/94), class 47 (1583/90, 1830, 1907/23/34/35), class 52 (1069) Cardiff General Class 08 (3261), class 35 (7007/67/92/96), class 37 (6885, 6909/70/75/77/78/82/95), class 46 (150), class 47 (1591, 1600/65/68), class 43 (855), class (1004/25/38). Cardiff – Barry Class 35 (7078), class 47 (1901/04/15/19). Locomotives of note are the three class 14’s which had all been withdrawn almost two years previously in October 1968 (9509/19) and December 1969 (9535). 9509/19 would not survive much longer as within three months they had been towed to G Cohen’s yard at Kettering and broken up in November 1970. 9535 was sold to the National Coal Board for further use in the North East and would survive until January 1984. A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. RMweb Gold Downendian Posted August 15, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 15, 2014 From the RMweb archive but worth posting again - look and weep what you could see in a day in the mid 1970s. Sunday August 15th 1976 Marathon trip to BREL works at Crewe and Doncaster and surrounding depots- did we really do all this in one day? We left at around 0300 and I well remember the parched yellow motorway embankments (1976-remember the drought?), and the very early morning mists which I'd never seen before (never needing to get up this early!). Westhouses was the first stop at around 0600 and what a fascinating place it was- I seem to remember a large proportion of the class 20s there were still in green livery. I can also distinctly remember to me an alien sulphurous smell in the atmosphere around the South Yorkshire coalfield area, which of course has now long since gone- those smells were new to me too. At Doncaster lines of 24s awaiting cutting were present as well as the first 31/0s to go, and also the last baby deltic D5901. As means of compensation, three new 56s (the first built at Doncaster) were there in frames, and 55 013, Black Watch - my last Deltic. After rapidly touring some Sheffield sheds we made our way to Crewe, and that vast expanse of a works was host to now less than 63 class 47s, plus some early class 40 withdrawls. Also the HST build programme was in full swing, and class 50 overhauls had yet to switch to Doncaster. I have some groggy photos of the day which I will try and scan and upload in due course. I'd had one too many fizzy drinks (not alcoholic I hasten to add, I was only 15!) and based on the rough ride endemic with 1970s coaches I managed to throw up in the bushes at Cockshute after suffering badly from travel sickness between Crewe and Stoke.
