firefly9
have started my diorama this weekend. going to incorporate a couple of modified hornby75 ton breakdown cranes amongst other things. some pics of the work so far.
firefly9
started work on the baseboard today(pictures to follow) the premise of the layout is going to be the scene of a shunting mishap with some suitably damaged wagons laying at the bottom of an embankment and a recovery operation underway. have now started to modify (chop up/damage) some old wagons that have been involved in the incident. The Hornby breakdown crane under modification will be leading the recovery. more news to follow asap
firefly9
well the papier macheing got finished last night as did the roughing up of the wagons involved in the incident.. The pictures give a general impression of how things will start to look.
Robert McGee
As the wagons will be stationary, and will not be moving, how about you take the couplings of as it will look for realistic. Overall, I promising looking project here.
firefly9
yeah they will be coming off. just positioned them for an overall generall image of how things will look. more bits purchased today.
firefly9
some more pics of the diorama. did a little more tonight. The n gauge shops are only there to give an impression of what the final look will be like. some 00 ones on the finished version.
firefly9
some more pics of the diorama. really coming together now. just the road, overbridge painting and weathering, some detailing and low relief shops to do then work can concentrate on superdetailing the model breakdown crane. please feel free to let me know your thoughts good and bad. DJH584
Excellent diorama - reminds me of an episode in Coronation Street many years back when the rail bridge collapsed and a number of actors were "killed" off so to speak. However looking at your last picture, as this is supposed to be a siding misadventure, isn't the piece of track on the road NOT supposed to be there? If it was, then the length of the siding would have taken it over the road and therefore another bridge would have been there. So would it not look more realistic to have the remains of the buffers and a retaining wall deposited on the road below along with the brake van being overturned? Regards David
firefly9
there is going to be a set of smashed buffers laying amongst the debris. the story behind it is that its a headshunt/shunt release siding and the loco has either run away or vandals have caused some damage, leading to the incident. more pics to follow. firefly9
oh and no there is no track on the road that was just a piece in the background.
firefly9
more pictures of the crane here. Just about finished the superdetailing of the chassis and superstructure. I've decided i'm going to add an underside to the jib as it lacks on the model. Think she's coming along quite nicely though. richard
firefly9
more progress. the main crane body is now in undercoat and ready for top coating just about. sorry for poor pic quality. blackberry's dont have great cameras.
firefly9
got the main body and jib of the crane sprayed in grey primer tonight. had to redo the jib as the paint started to bubble after the first attempt even though it had been thoroughly washed. also had a small setback with the chassis. i bought new wheelsets and bearing cups to insert in the chassis and after fitting new plastic side pieces and drilling out the 2mm holes from outside the frame to fit the bearing cups inside the frame the new wheelsets would not fit. After much playing about and swearing i got one to fit but no more. I then decided that maybe some plastoc axle/metal tyred wheelsets from an old coach would suffice as the plastic axles may give a bit more when trying to insert in the bearing cups which they did but barely any easier at all. it was only after i put the crane down on top of my tv set i noticed that it rocked from corner to corner. Checking the wheels more carefully it looked as though the chassis had not been sat straight and true enough when i drilled it. I've now asked a friend with a miller if he can rectify the problem with a 1 mm milling tool on his accurately set up milling bed which he can do. This has however required me too remove the wheels and bearing cups and fill all internal and external holes with milliput and file back smooth level with the surface of the plastic insert side pieces i put in. hence why the chassis is not yet painted. I've also included a picture of a prototype crane so you can compare real and model. Hope you like. Richard

angell328
Hi Firefly, Nice to see another crane geting a makeover! Going to be following this thread with interest, looking like you are going to set a nice scene here. I did a make over of the 75 tonner myself and the wheelsets where a big headache for me. If you are just having this as a static model then just replacing the wheels will be fine, but if you are thinking about using it on a layout with curves then you will have to do some work to the center two wheels. I ended up grinding off the flanges to allow the bogie to traverse curves. There are plenty of pics on my thread if you would like to see my attempt at getting round the problem. Good luck with the layout, the crane is looking stunning, can't wait to see it in action. Cheers Matt
firefly9
hi matt. seeing your thread was part of the reason i decided to do the crane. so consider yourself a trendsetter. i've done many of the ideas you did on your crane such as the spirograph gear system and also i've taken a couple of things to the next level i hope. I managed to find a double hook which will get fitted and the the gear's on the cabling system. Some of the mod's have let to unforseen problems such as the pulley area roof not laying flat due to the gear i've inserted on a pulley bar but will work round that. i'm surprising myself with how well i think its going so far. angell328
Me a trendsetter, well never thought that would happen!! Glad I gave you some tips, looking good. I do like how you have done the roof with the two support bars, something I may have to borrow of you when I start Mk2 Also i like the rotational steadying points you have put on the bogie to help keep the crane body level, something I wish I had done as she does tend to sit tail heavy in transit. Looking forward to seeing what other little tweaks you come up with too. Reading this months Railway Modeller looks like they are going to have an article on someone who has done a scratch build of a 75 tonner in next months copy, making sure I get a copy as may have a few nice tips in it too. Looking forward to seeing how this progesses, Matt
firefly9
ah cheers for the heads up. will get myself a copy when its out. yeah the other mods havent been hard to incorporate just some plasticard and glue. i have also made an underside to the jib to give it more depth. been to the great central at loughborough this afternoon and got some video footage of their ex thornaby crane as we travelled past. one thing i have noticed on several cranes is the difference in roof. soome appear to have a rounded roof and some appear to have a four section angled roof. if you see some pics of the cranes at the clapham junction incident in 1988 you'll see what i mean. i ended up using a cut down t section glued to the roof as a centre point anr then glued 4 section of card to the original roof to create a more angular roof which i then filled and sanded. I,ve also had difficulty sourcing scrap parts to use for the detailing. one of probs i'm having is finding some thin mesh for the air intake on the crane side but i'm sure it will solve itself soon enough. angell328
I used an old Panther tank grill for the side, but looking at the latest Bachmann class 37 I recieved the anti ice grills that come with it as an optional part may do the job nicely. So if you know anyone that has one that they dont wish to put the grills on then maybe able to get them off them to use. My mate steve got the railway accident book that came out recently, and that is full of many many different angle pictures of the cranes, all the different types too, from steam to hydraulic. Lots of the 75 tonner mainly which was a great help for me. It's a shame I'm sunning myself in the desert at the mo or I could dive in my bits box for you for odds and sods. You need to find a military modeller and make friends with them, we never throw any bits away!!
firefly9
i reckon i can just about scrape enough bits together to do it. i could'nt find anywhere to get anything that resembled the pulleys for the jib end but i went into a local bead shop and the had a cylindrical type of bead with grooves cut into it which will do the job. I reckon the pulleys are the most difficult bits to source. i think for crane mk 2 i'm going to take loads more time and possibly make bits myself such as the pulleys on a modellers lathe and various other bits. if you look on youtube someone has made a model of a working Hornby 75 tonner with a motorised jib that raises and lowers. its quite impressive. i also have one of the triang cowans sheldon 45 toneers thats going to be put through the works after this one is done. angell328
Will have to have a look on youtube for the working 75 tonner, sounds interesting! For Mk2 I was bought some very nice circular punches (cheers steve!) that leather makers use. My idea being to make up a laminate of several pieces of plasicard of different diameters. This will make a nice shallow grove for the cable and scale thinkness sides. Also going to scratch build a new jib and match truck, the jib is too short and be easy to knock up a new match truck to ensure the pocket for the hook is the correct siz and depth. Always the way when you have built something and think i can improve on that. But thats the joy of modelling for me!! Love to see some pics of the 45 tonner, sounds interesting!
firefly9
i think the match truck for the current crane is just a wagon chassis so a new scale rone would be perfect. pm me sometime. i have an engineers drawing of the 75 tonner that would be a good starting point for the mods. RMweb Premium M.I.B Posted July 11, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 11, 2011 Anything involving modified/detailed cranes gets my interest. I chickened out with some of the detailing so I tarped the centre section of my 2 cranes. The chains had to go tho. Great entry.
Baby Deltic
May I make a couple of observations - I think you need a smashed buffer stop amongst the debris on the road, maybe it could be smashed through the shop window opposite where the 20 ton brake has shoved it down the bank and across the road. There is no damage to the embankment or soil pushed down the bank. I would have thought heavy vehicles such as a 20 ton brake would cut a nice deep thurrow in the soil. Its going to be a very interesting scene when it is completed.
firefly9
ahead of you there baby deltic. some slight amendments to the actual diorama are planned and the polyfilla will be coming out to create some tram lines in the soil. there will also be plenty more debris at the bottom of the hill smashed wood, telephone box, maybe even a parked car. plus emergency vehicles on site.
