dikitriki
Hi Heyside is a 7mm urban layout based on the Oldham Loop in the late 50s/early 60s. The group comprises some 8 modellers and we are working towards the Aylesbury exhibition in May 2013. This topic relates the goings on as we prepare. Today we found an elderly van shunted into the warehouse siding... Richard
djgriff
Hi Richard looking forward to seeing Heyside, some wonderfull modeling going on there. We have met a few times at wolverhamton, talking about my Hattchet A3 build. Dave
two tone green
Very nice Richard, certainly a good taster for things to come.
dikitriki
Thanks Dave and TTG. 5 months is none too short a time to do everything we wish to. One of my main tasks is to finish a signal bridge and gantry. Here is the current state of play on the signal bridge. It's based on that at Werneth on the Oldham Loop, only in this case, the left hand signal controls the entry to the goods loop. Just the handrails, stanchions and ladder to build. greenglade
Very nice Richard, I have been here but a short while but soon recognised the quality of your work. Happy New Year..... Pete
Giles
The bridge and signals...... The closer you look - the better it gets! Beautiful modelling!
3 link
Happy New year Richard, 5 months till the show, no need to rush then . Just looking at the signal crank levers, will there be another two located on the bridge wall to get the correct angle to pull the signals on and off ? Hopefully see you down at Bristol later on in the month. ATB, Martyn.

Hopefully see you down at Bristol later on in the month. ATB, Martyn. Hello Martyn And a Happy New Year to you too! No more cranks are needed. Everything is so free that the weight of the 'cable' on the right hand side of the crank is pulling that side down. There is enough movement in the system that I can move the cranks anti-clockwise by a few mm to a more normal angle without pulling the signal off. When the pull rods are installed, all will be well (and partly hidden by the ladder too). Yep, looking forward to Bristol and meeting faces old and new. dikitriki
Those signals are certainly pretty special but I'm even more awed by what they're supported by... undoubtedly the work of the Fabergé of footbridge fabricators :-) D Thankyou David. I like the alliterative description. In fact a mate and I spent an afternoon designing a kit for a 60' lattice footbridge, he then did the artwork and we had 3 footbridges etched for Heyside. They are in multiples of 6' panels - the one with the signals on is a 5 panel 30' bridge. So, while I am really pleased with the way they have turned out, I don't think I'm due all the credit you may give. In best Blue Peter fashion, here's one done earlier, a 7 panel, 42' one with different supports.... Yours Richard
dikitriki
Hi One of the locos I am trying to get ready for Aylesbury is my Patriot which is undergoing a major interim rebuild. I wanted to film the first test run of Lady Godiva, and while I had the camera out, I filmed the 2P on an inspection trip and the 105 DMU. The first and last clips have sound, the middle 2 don't, unless you count the squeaky bearings:) Most of the work to date on the Patriot has centred on a wholesale scratch/rebuild of the valve gear with very little of the original kit used. Any pics of the Ex L&Y gantry with the upper quads fitted? It was almost complete last time I saw the layout! Cheers JF
alant
Looks good Richard, looking forward to viewing at Aylesbury. The lattice bridge is outstanding. Alan.
dikitriki
Hi Folks I've been out of action for the last month with professional commitments, so haven't got to my workbench or posted here, but life is slowly returning to normal and I can get back to preparing for Aylesbury. Picking up on Jon's question....no, not yet finished, but it is what is on my bench at the moment. Here's the current position. The operating wires are an issue as the gantry it's based on used pulley wheels. I have adapted C&L wheels to act as cranks but hope they will give the impression of wheels....more or less. The wires all go over one end on cranks, 9 of them (I am yet to add a calling on arm to one of the dolls, so I solderd 9 cranks to some tube to reduce the wobble on the axle - I now have to separate them with the piercing saw. Now the fun of making them work..... Cheers Richard
Jon Fitness
Thats some lovely work there Richard (as always!). Who's make of etched backblinds are you using? they look about the best I've seen. I've also spotted a rather nice LMS parralell lattice post bracket signal on Heyside "elswhere" on the net and was wondering if thats a scratchbuild or a commercial item... Keep up the stunning work Jon F.
dikitriki
Hi This is the signal Jon was referring to - it's from an old etch for an ECML signal, at least the lattice post is, the rest is Scale Signal Supply bits and, as usual, some scratchbuilding. Built by Clive. The running sessions are a bit of a free-for-all. Here the gardner is gawping in astonishment at a most unlikely cop. Finally, a quiet moment in the yard. I'm sure something will be along in a while. Richard

dikitriki
Glad you like it asa. On running nights, we have a more relaxed attitude to what runs, so we can get some rather unusual, and certainly out-of region trains. I don't often record these, but the latest was an unusual vehicle and I thought of wider interest. It's the BR (SR) inspection saloon Caroline, coupled to my West Country. Hope you enjoy! dikitriki
Hi I've been able to do a bit more work on the gantry, proving the pulley wheel/crank concept, and have got 2 dolls/4 arms wired up. It's all a bit tight, but none of the adjacent wires interferes with the next, and all arms return to on under their own weight. Richard
asa
Modelling at it's finest, fantastic.
Jon Fitness
Cracking stuff Richard. Those pulley wheels look the dogs doodahs . The gantry is really going to be a talking point on the layout. Jon F.
dikitriki
Hi I've now got the gantry finished bar the painting. The final drive rods from the cranks will be attached when the servos are installed. Richard

dikitriki
Hi As the exhibition deadline hurtles towards us, I have been working on one of the obvious missing bits - a fire escape on the large factory. Originally built in plastic card, it was horribly vulnerable and had warped unacceptably. It was taken off some time ago (like almost 2 years!) but there always seemed more important things to do. Anyway, I have got round to scratchbuilding a new one in metal, so it should stay true, and will be so much stronger than before. The mdf backing piece is tailored to fit on the inside of the building, and the fire excape bolts through. In theory, in the right location... I built the 5 flights of stairs by hand as I think fabricated ladders look so much better than etched, at least in the larger scales. I can't say I enjoy building them though. In case you're wondering, the escape is based on that on the curved goods warehouse at Oldham Clegg Street Goods Yard - to a certain extent - and there were no handrails to the ladders, no kick boards; in fact, you were darned lucky to get a fire escape at all!
